Michael Branson Smith is a web artist, technologist, and assistant professor of Communications Technology and presently spends a lot of time creating animated GIFs, particularly with a nostalgic eye or by remixing with other artists. He regularly teaches a course on digital storytelling inspired by the DS106 community. He is also a multi-media producer of industrial work principally for not-for-profits – including video, artwork, and design.
Besides his teaching and creative endeavors, MBS is the Director of Academic Computing and Educational Technology at York College. He is particularly interested in advocating the use of open educational technology and is leading this effort on his campus by providing faculty and students access to domain names and shared hosting for digital pedagogy and research.
MBS works on special projects for the CUNY Academic Commons, a home-grown academic social network built with the open-source tools Wordpress/Buddypress.
