York’s Marcel Esonwune Named NABC All-American

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced the 2011 State Farm Coaches’ Division III All-America Teams and York College senior standout Marcel Esonwune has once again found himself on the team, earning a third-team selection.

The senior from Nigeria finished his four-year career at York with another outstanding season.  Esonwune finished as the nation’s leading rebounder, as he averaged 14.0 boards per game.  He also ranked second in the country in blocked shots per game (4.4) and was second in double-doubles (21).  In addition, his 20.1 scoring average was 35th best in the nation.  He scored double-digit points in every game this season and eclipsed 20 or more points in 13 of 26 games.

“You don’t get a player like Marcel very often,” said York Head Coach Ronald St. John.  “They come around every once in a while.  He’s one of the best players I’ve ever coached, if not the best.”

Esonwune will go down as one of the best basketball players in York College history. His 1,818 points are the second-highest in school history and his 360 blocks are a school record.  His 1,325 rebounds are also believed to be a school record.
