York Students Shine Among CUNY Stars
The York students were in good company as CUNY brought some of the best and brightest at CUNY together to be recognized by the CUNY community for their demonstrated leadership abilities and for their commitment to enhancing their leadership acumen. In his welcoming remarks Chancellor Matthew Goldstein reminded all in the room that our country was facing challenges and that excellent leadership is needed in these times and CUNY is investing in the leaders of tomorrow.
Chowdhury and Simson were selected as this year’s CUNY Student Leadership Award recipients from York College. Each year, the Chief Student Affairs officers from each campus select two students from across the University system to be honored. Students receiving this award and distinction have an average Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or better, and have demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities in both academic and co-curricular activities.
Carpio, Chimbo, and Rose represented York in the inaugural CUNY Leadership Academy (CLA) Fellows program. The Leadership Academy Fellows are selected from across the University to experience a state-of-the-art multi-cultural leadership education with an emphasis on service, community building, global perspectives, and innovation.
The ceremony was masterfully orchestrated by Mistress of Ceremony Tracie Strahan of News 4 New York and featured encouraging words to these future leaders from Chancellor Goldstein, Vice Chancellor Garrie Moore, City College President Gregory Williams and CLA Executive Director Joe-Joe McManus. All in attendance were treated to a keynote address by Frans Johansson author of The Medici Effect, who delivered a fast paced presentation that encouraged students to be the leaders of tomorrow’s diverse teams - the diverse teams that will create tomorrow’s social, business, and technical advances. The evening ended with impassioned speeches made by two CLA Fellows, Kimmesha Edwards (John Jay College) and York’s very own Jahi Rose who ended the evening with a rousing “Yes We Can!”
