Professor Timothy J. Amrhein Passes Away

Professor Amrhein, chair of the Department of Performing and Fine Arts passed on Thursday evening, October 6, 2016 after a short struggle with cancer. During the past few weeks, Professor Amrhein was fulfilling his responsibilities as a faculty member and department chair coming in to meet with colleagues and students.

Professor Amrhein was a distinguished faculty member who oversaw numerous theater productions through the years. He began his service in the fall 2000 term, granted tenure  and promotion to Associate Professor and Professor, and elected repeatedly to serve as department chair. Ironically, Tim became department chair when Ken Adams passed away.

Tim’s service encompassed the whole college community having served, chaired  and been instrumental on committees that design and implemented university wide policies and initiatives. In doing so, professor Amrhein was also a driving force for all theater productions staged by faculty and students. His reputation and accomplishments earned him the Distinguished Scholar Fellowship by the Graduate School where he continued his work on applying and translating the ideas of minorities (specifically Latinos) into the context of American theater in English.

At this difficult time, our thoughts are with his department and his family, especially his three year old daughter, Zoe. All of you who knew Tim, especially those who were his friend on social media, know what a central place Zoe had in his life as seen in his pictures and videos of her and with her. Even a simple thing such as sharing lunch, became of source of mutual love and devotion.

*The family has arranged a funeral service for Friday, October 14, 2016, 4-8pm at the

J. Foster Phillips Funeral Home at 179-24 Linden Boulevard in Jamaica, New York 11434

An event to celebrate Professor Amrhein’s life is being planned at York and more information will be provided.
