Welcome Message from President Keizs, Fall Semester 2013

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff: As we launch the 2013 - 2014 Academic Year, I trust that you have all enjoyed your summer respite and are now reenergized for this new academic year. Let me take this opportunity to say, welcome back!

I look forward to working with all of you as we prepare for another year of achievements to be capped off by another successful commencement next spring. I also extend special welcome to the Class of 2017 and encourage the Classes of 2014 through 16, to continue to work hard and to take advantage of the various resources provided for your success, such as the Academic Achievement Center, the Writing Center as well as the Counseling Center, Scholarship Office and the Office of Career Services. Please know that all of us are here to support all of you in your goal to succeed in college.

For those of you who may have missed the announcements, Dr. Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith, who served York with distinction as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs over the past six years, has accepted the position of president of Fort Valley University in Georgia. It is to this end that I take this opportunity to once again congratulate Dr. Panayiotis Meleties, formerly Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, who is now Acting Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; and Dr. Donna Chirico, the former chair of the Behavioral Sciences Department on becoming Acting Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. I ask that you join me in giving them your full support and in welcoming them in these exciting new roles.

We begin the academic year under new leadership at CUNY as well. Dr. William P. Kelly, the immediate past president of the CUNY Graduate Center, was appointed Interim Chancellor when Dr. Matthew Goldstein stepped down this past spring. I recently met with Dr. Kelly to discuss our success of the last year and our agenda for this new academic year. Like Dr. Goldstein before him, Dr. Kelly has pledged his support to help York in reaching its many goals.

Once again, welcome back and welcome to Academic Year 2013 - 2014!
