App-Enabled Virtual New Student Orientation Succeeds

York’s first virtual New Students Orientation (NSO) in early August was an unqualified success according to organizers from the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs (EMSA).

“EMSA showed up and showed out,” said Dr. La Toro Yates, interim director of EMSA, following the event. “[It] was a great job by all.”

Dr. Jean Phelps, director of the Office of Student Activities, which is part of EMSA, said the efforts by the team met and exceeded expectations, given that a digitally-enabled student orientation was never done at York previously.

“After months of looking at various platforms for NSO, we settled on a new and innovative way of producing the program." said Dr. Phelps. “Linda Chesney and I co-chaired The NSO Committee, but it was the entire team that helped it come to fruition. It was truly a team effort and a great success.”

Phelps added that Linda Chesney, Director of the Career Services Office “was a great co-chair,” who kept the team on track as they organized this first virtual orientation.

“Vica (Erzulie Mars) introduced us to the tremendous capabilities of the YC App."said Phelps. “She and Savitrie (Rampersaud), working behind the scenes, manipulated the YC App to provide easy access to the sessions. It proved to be the best platform for NSO. Jonathan Quash and his tech team, did a phenomenal job of helping to organize and present NSO in a new format. The Co-Chairs of the subcommittees worked diligently and presented quality workshops and sessions. We did it, congratulations Team EMS.
