The Passing of Dr. Mesfin Araya

It is with great sadness that I share with you that Dr. Mesfin Araya passed away in February 2015. Dr. Araya served as Associate Professor of Black Studies in the Department of Social Sciences at York College from 1994 until his retirement in March 2013. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science in 1988 from the CUNY Graduate Center and his BA in Political Science and Economics from Haile Selassie University , Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

During his tenure at York, Prof. Araya served for many years as the coordinator of Afro-American Studies and Director of the African American Resource Center. He developed and taught many courses in his discipline, including Introduction to Afro-American Studies and The Black Experience in the Caribbean.  A specialist in African politics, his research was centered on the state in the Horn of Africa, covering Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia focusing on the North/South conflict, political development and social change. Several of his publications appeared in the Ethiopian Review, The Journal of Northeast-African Studies and the Journal of Modern African Studies.
