Thank You: A Message from President Keizs

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff: Thank you for your support in making this year’s Commencement a successful experience for our graduates. When I communicated with you earlier this year that we would be piloting a new commencement model, some of you expressed concerns while others enthusiastically supported the idea.

Faculty, deans, vice presidents, directors and students as well as my office, formed a partnership to ensure our students and their families would have a good experience, one very different from the standard single ceremony we all had come to expect. Based on the feedback we have received thus far, many of you were pleased with the results of the three exercises.

Those of you who attended one or all three ceremonies will also agree that our student-speakers, Valedictorian Katsiaryna Hud (School of Arts and Sciences); as well as Irene Hanna (School of Health and Behavioral Sciences) and Kateryna Kats (School of Business and Information Systems) proved that there are great things happening at York.

Our keynote speakers, Dr. Karen Maybank, Journalist Julian Phillips and JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes, were also inspiring and we thank them for their generosity in addressing our graduates and spending time with us. We were honored as well, to have as our special guests, Assemblywoman Vivian Cook at the commencement for the School of Health and Behavioral Sciences; and Congressman Gregory Meeks, who addressed the graduates of the School of Business and Information Systems. We also appreciated the presence and words of the members of the CUNY Chancellery and trustees in attendance.

As we close the book on Academic Year 2013 – 2014, plans now begin for the upcoming academic year and graduating the Class of 2015. I already hear that the committee is building on this year’s success to enhance next year’s festivities.

Congratulations to all 1070 members of the Class of 2014!
