This course offers an extraordinary opportunity for students in political science and other disciplines to gain exciting and valuable experiences working in the offices of elected officials in the New York City Council, New York State Assembly and Senate, Judges in Criminal and

Civil Courts, Prosecutors, Office of the New York City Public Advocate and a variety of government agencies. Alternatively students may work for a non-governmental social service, labor, community development, public interest legal or advocacy organization, e.g., 1199 Service Employees International Union, Center for Constitutional Rights, Coalition for the Homeless, Neighborhood Housing Services of Jamaica, National Action Network, etc. Internships enhance your resume and also provide opportunities for networking and references that can definitely enhance your chances of securing employment or graduate school acceptance after graduation!

 Students intern at a government or non-governmental placement for  a minimum of 8-10 hours per week, attend a weekly seminar 2 hours per week and participate in three informative CUNY Forums at the CUNY Graduate Center.

 Pre-requisites: 6 hours in Behavioral Sciences or Social Sciences, 2.75 GPA or permission of the Instructor.

 In recent semesters students have reported excellent experiences with Congressman Gregory Meeks, Congresswoman Nadia Valasquez, Bronx Borough President Reuben Diaz,  Assemblywoman Barbara Clarke,  former Councilman Leroy Comrie, Councilman Daneek Miller, Councilwoman Inez Dickens, Councilman Reuben Wills,  former Councilman James Sanders, Judge Ronald Hollie, Judge Pamela Jackman-Brown, Queens District Attorney’s Office, New York State Department of Labor, the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation and Community Mediation Services among others. Several Interns have been asked to continue at their placements with the prospect of securing permanent employment!

 Finally, an Internship in POL 393/394 can lead to opportunities to compete for prestigious CUNY-wide Internships, which come with stipends of $2,000 and up. For example, York College students have been awarded CUNY Caucus Scholarships to serve with members of the New York State Assembly; Women’s Public Service Internships which offer opportunities to be placed with outstanding women in public service; and NYS Assembly Albany Internships where interns actually reside in Albany for a full semester!
