Dr. Meleties, the first of the three candidates for the position of Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, will be on campus on Thursday, October 9, 2014

Dr. Panayiotis Meleties

Brief Biography

Dr. Panayiotis. Meleties currently serves as Interim Provost and Sr. Vice President for Academic Affairs at York College/CUNY. Dr. Meleties earned his doctorate in Chemistry from the CUNY Graduate School and certificates in academic leadership from Cornell University and Harvard University Institutes. Prior to his current appointment, he served as the Dean of Academic Affairs at York College and, most recently, as Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. Before his appointments at York College, he served as the chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technology at Bronx Community College where he started his faculty tenure.

Currently, he is appointed professor at York College and the CUNY Graduate School. The range of his scholarly interests includes the study of carbohydrates and their potential in synthetic chemistry to create novel antibiotic and antitumor agents, and related reactions and reaction mechanisms. In addition, Dr. Meleties has been interested and was instrumental in developing new degree programs to promote student recruitment and retention especially in the sciences.

Dr. Meleties has been the recipient of numerous grants to support his research and other interests, including awards from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Education.
