Esonwune Named CUNYAC Player of the Year; Hamilton-Lopez and Wickham Named to First Team
York College junior center Marcel Esonwune has been named the 2009-10 CUNY Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year. In addition, senior guard Nicholas Hamilton-Lopez and women's basketball sophomore Kadisha Wickham were named to the CUNYAC All-Stars First-Team.
Esonwune, who was a five-time CUNYAC Player of the Week selection, dominated the league all season long. He currently leads all of Division III in blocked shots per game (4.1) and rebounds per game (15.2). A D3hoops.com, pre-season All-American, Esonwune also ranks third in the conference in scoring (19.2 ppg) and second in field goal percentage (.592). His phenomenal play led York to a record of 19-6 (12-1 CUNYAC) and gave the Cardinals the CUNYAC regular season title.
Hamilton-Lopez, established himself as one of the best shooters in the country the season. As of February 14, he ranks third in the nation in three-point field goals made per game (3.5). He also ranks fourth in the conference in points per game (19.1) and is second in assists (4.1 per game).
Medgar Evers head coach Chris Pursoo was named Coach of the Year and Hunter’s Eric Klingsberg earned Rookie of the Year honors.
York will host the City College of New York on Saturday in the opening round of the CUNY Athletic Conference Tournament. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. It will also be “Spirit Day” at York College. A number of great prizes will be awarded throughout, including tickets on Jet Blue Airlines. The festivities for “Spirit Day” begin prior to the game at 1:00 p.m.
Wickham, a center, had a breakout season for the Lady Cardinals. The sophomore ranked second in the conference in points per game (18.7), third in rebounding (12.7 rpg), ninth in field goal percentage (.478) and first in steals (4.1 per game). She also ranks among the nation’s elite and currently is 23rd in the nation in scoring, 12th in rebounds and 16th in steals.
In addition, Wickham led York to its first winning season since the 2000-01 year. The Lady Cardinals finished with a record of 13-11, 8-5 in the CUNYAC and will be the fifth seed in the CUNYAC playoffs this weekend. York will visit the College of Staten Island on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Should they advance they will take on the winner of Baruch College and Medgar Evers College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
