A Message from President Eanes Regarding Fall 2020

Dear York College Students,

The Fall 2020 semester begins on Wednesday, August 26, 2020. Whether you are a continuing York student, starting your first semester of college, transferring from another school, or attending graduate school, this semester will likely be very different than what you planned. The health and safety of the York community is our number one priority, and it is important that we implement safety measures to ensure everyone’s well-being. As a result, we must limit access to the campus.

Following the guidance and directions given to us by The City University of New York, roughly 95% of York’s courses will be delivered in a distance learning format. Each instructor will determine if the course involves synchronous instruction (the class “meets” at the same time) or asynchronous instruction (the instructor posts the material but you complete the work at a time that is convenient for you--remember to comply with the instructor’s deadlines). Approximately 5% of courses will be in a hybrid format, in which select lab classes will be held in-person. These are for labs that are mandated for accreditation, or that require hands-on activities for which there are no virtual substitutes. These hybrid courses include primarily skill and competency labs in the professional programs (such as clinical lab sciences, nursing, occupational therapy, physical education, and physician assistant) and a limited number of biology labs.

In order to protect your health and the health of those who must be on campus, we ask that individuals refrain from coming to campus unless absolutely necessary. In addition, following guidelines established by the CDC and New York State, the College will employ the New York State Health Screening Protocol, wherein any individual coming to campus will be required to disclose information regarding their possible exposure to the COVID-19 virus through a series of questions, answered every day the individual comes to campus.

Further, every time an individual comes to campus, their temperature will be checked using a non-touch thermometer – anyone with a body temperature equal to or greater than 100.4 degrees will not be permitted to enter the campus. In addition, everyone must wear face masks, practice social distancing, and limit their time on campus. Any student found in violation of these directives may be subject to discipline under article XV of the CUNY bylaws. Please note that only two campus entrances will be open: Guy R. Brewer and Liberty Avenue.

All services, including Library services, will be offered virtually. The food pantry will be available by appointment and the child care center is offering limited child care options. If you need assistance in securing technology, please contact the Office of Information Technology as soon as possible. If you have general questions, please contact the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs at 718-262-2331 or email studentdevelopment@york.cuny.edu.

Throughout the semester we will be updating the Fall 2020 webpage, which will serve as a resource for you; please be sure to check this page often as it provides more details on important student services. It is also important to check your York email at least daily and monitor the Cardinal App for important updates.

I know that these are challenging times, but I am hopeful that we will continue to work together to protect the health and safety of the York community.

Best,

Dr. Berenecea Johnson Eanes, President
