Tech Fee Plan

Technology Fee Plan (2004-2005), Many of the items described below have become recurring costs supported by the Technology Fee funding. The College will explore ways to offset some these costs in order that future plans can include new initiatives and enhancements.

The following items correspond to the chart of budgeted expenses.

1. Computer Laboratory Upgrades and Support
$133,598

Lab 2E03 in the Academic Core and a complex of computer labs (C201) on the second floor in the Classroom Building (C201) contain about 280 computers. These labs serve students College-wide and are used by 90-100 courses across all disciplines each semester. Over the past two years we have replaced most of the computer in the Classroom Building. We plan to continue improving support services by upgrading computers in AC-2E03, which is heavily used by the Computer Science and Information Management Systems programs. In addition, we will maintain student access to laboratories for open use utilizing extended and special hours scheduling.

2. Student email account support staff

College assistants are assigned to work with students to establish and maintain email accounts and to utilize web access to services including the CUNY portal. As the College moves to the University email solution, support will be provided for the conversation and maintenance services.

The Office of Career Services will make available technology-based opportunities for students to prepare for the job market and career development.

5. Library Technology Support
$30,000

Database subscriptions previously supported by Technology Fee funding will be maintained. Ten new computers will be allocated to the Library in order to annually replace aging computers.

6. Student Access to Computing and the Internet

In previous years, funding from the Technology Fee has been used to establish ancillary facilities for student access to the internet included the Adaptive Technology room for students with disabilities and kiosks located throughout the campus for students to access various college services. These will be maintained and enhanced.

7. Remote Dialup Access

A channelized T1 line was installed and a remote server were purchased in 2002-03 to improve remote dialup access by students to the College and the Internet resources. The annual lease of the T1 line is supported by the Technology Fee.

8. Student Government Technology Laboratory and Offices

The Student Government Technology Laboratory was established prior to the Technology Fee but has been significantly upgrades. Further enhancements will be implemented this year with open hours of access maintained.

Academic Computing Faculty Position

In order to implement the recommendations of the University Task Force on Educational Technology and to support its new Coordinated Undergraduate Education initiation, York has begun to develop a technological competency program to realize curricular goals of technology for students. A faculty member has been appointed for the development and administration of placement tests and the teaching of computer literacy courses.

10. Faculty Technology Support

The College has developed a phased program for the replacement of computers in faculty offices. Consideration will be given to the effective arrangement of printers within departments.

11. Blackboard Licensing Fee

This is the annual contribution to the University's Blackboard License and server maintenance.

12. Classroom Support Services

As faculty members gain experience with the uses of technology for classroom purposes, there has been a significant increase in the requested use of laptops. Additional laptops will be deployed.

13. Help Desk Manager
This position has been supported annually by the Technology Fee as a recurring expense. Working with several college assistants, the help desk manager provides technical support to all computer laboratories and faculty offices.

14. Webmaster
This position has been supported annually by the Technology Fee as a recurring expense. The Webmaster has provided improved versatility of the web site for students, faculty, administrative offices and for those wishing to access information about the College.

15. Instructional Technologist
This position has been supported annually by the Technology Fee as a recurring expense. The Instructional Technologist has principal responsibility of working with faculty members on the uses of BlackBoard and other technological applications. Faculty development workshops are held each semester regarding various software applications and instructional techniques. The person in this position also maintains the web page for Academic Computing provides extensive information on policies, procedures and about access to various educational technology resources.

17. Network Security

Network security has become a major consideration for the ongoing maintenance of the College's information technology network as internet use has expanded and media types have diversified. In an effort to bolster security a new server will be installed with complementary software. A Network Security Manager will be appointed mid-year to support these activities.

The Technology Fee Committee is supportive of the conversion to the University-based email system and looks forward to the expanded versatility and cost-effectiveness.

22. Requests for Proposal

In future years, the Technology Fee Committee hopes to implement an RFP program where members of the College community can proposed technology based projects and purchases. Given the current funds available and other planned activities, this cannot be funded this year.

23. Senior Programmer Analyst

To be appointed mid-year, the College plans to appoint an analyst to prepare for the implementation of the University ERP projects and other technology-based student support activities. In particular, the College plans to implement Degree Works.

24. Additional Language Laboratory Hardware
