One Last Hurrah As A York Student

Count Jose Cuevas among the recent York College graduates who was not able to attend his own graduation for a good reason.

Cuevas, founder and president of American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), York Chapter, had the opportunity to visit Israel between May 28th and June 2nd. He had all intentions of attending his graduation on June3rd. but flew on a “buddy pass” and was bumped for a paying customer. He was not able to get on a return flight until the 3rd. graduation day.

“I was thinking about my graduation the whole time coming back,” said Cuevas. “But I don’t regret it because I learnt a lot and it will be good for my career as an aviation diplomat. I had the opportunity to attend the Global Airports Security Conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, organized by the American Association of Airport Executives, the International Association of Airport Executives (IAAE), and the Israel Airport Authority.”
Cuevas, one of the most visible Aviation Management majors at York, explained the trip was invaluable.

“At this conference, I had the opportunity to attend workshops that covered current airport security issues such as passenger screening and imaging technology, air cargo security, explosives detection and baggage handling system approaches, national security identity programs, biometrics and passenger facilitation; and emergency response management, he said. “We also had the opportunity to take a tour through the security facilities at Ben Gurion International Airport (one of the most secured airports in the world).”
He was also able to “experience Israel,” visiting ancient sites like the City of Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, the Dead Sea and the City of Masada.

“Event though I could not make it for graduation, this trip enabled me to have my final undergraduate international exposure,” said Cuevas who also participated in study-abroad programs in Paris and Argentina during his time at York. “I want to be a diplomat in the aviation field. I'm working on getting my certification with the American Association of Airport Executives, and recently, I got accepted into the M.A. in Urban Affairs at Queens College, which I will start in late August.”
