Program Mission

The mission of the York College Department of Nursing is to offer a liberal arts-based educational experience to guide students in attaining the knowledge, skills, and values essential for professional nurse leaders and managers, including the ability to make sound judgments and address the health needs of diverse cultural groups within the urban community. There are two nursing program tracks in the Department of Nursing: The RN- Baccalaureate Program is designed to build upon the knowledge and competencies of Registered Nurses, who graduated from associate degree and diploma programs. The Generic Baccalaureate program is designed to prepare competent nursing professionals able to successfully pass the NCLEX-RN licensing examination. The Department of Nursing mission is congruent with the York College Vision and Mission.

Rationale for the Plan

In AY 2019-2020, the department will assess program goal two (PG2) to develop professional nurses who are proactive in addressing health care issues and able to make sound clinical judgments. The program student learning outcomes that will be addressed include: collaborate with clients, families, health team members to assist clients in achieving optimal wellness; advocate for health policies that address local and global health issues through participation in nursing organizations; and provide a safe environment using technology and information systems in nursing practice. The department decided that all four program goals would be addressed within a 3-year period on a continuous basis. The department will use the upper level senior courses of NURS 407, 415/430 and 420 as well as any other course deemed appropriate to assess these program goals and program level student learning outcomes. The assessment measures will include standardized data from Kaplan and Mountain Measurement NCLEX reports.

Data Collection and Evaluation

The data collection will occur from January 2018-May 2019. The Assessment Committee consisting of all faculty members will be involved in the assessment process. The assessment data is available to faculty via online access. The assessment coordinator will evaluate, analyze the data and the information will be presented to the faculty for interpretations, suggestions and review.
