Wednesday marks the 18th Anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and the crashing of Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania during a foiled hijacking. 2,997 people died, and over 6,000 people were injured during the attack. Among those killed was York alum Ezra Aviles ’82, a geologist, who died while trying to escape from the World Trade Center. Since the attack, hundreds of law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, and civilians have become ill or succumbed to diseases caused by toxin exposure from ground zero debris. In addition, thousands of men and women of our Armed Forces have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country heroically in response to the attack.
