Hence, searching a strand of DNA for portions similar to a known strand is an important task in bioinformatics: a problem in pattern recognition. And searching a strand of DNA for given segments is a daunting task for a person – but not for a properly programmed computer! Professors Lou D’Alotto and Lew Lasser of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science will present a classic algorithm in pattern recognition as well as some recent improvements.
