In order to secure services, maintain supports, acquire information, or access resources, parents of autistic children often interact with schools and medical bureaucracies that both inform parents' various identifications with autism and structured their daily activities. Experiences with these institutions both disorder and order the ways parents understand and negotiate their relationships with autism in their lives. The parents, however, are able to navigate these situations, and at times, even to reorder the institutions.
