Executive Leadership Breakfast: Small Business Development

Dr. Berenecea Johnson Eanes, president of York College, CUNY, invites you to join her for the next Executive Leadership Breakfast (ELB). Please join us!

The event will be held on Wednesday, October 19th, 2022, starting at 8:30 am. It will be in-person with a virtual component for those who wish to join us remotely. Panelists will be Sonya Smith, State Director, New York Small Business Development Center; and Harry Wells, Director, Small Business Development Center at York College.

This latest Executive Leadership Breakfast in the series will take place in the Faculty Dining Room (2-D01) of the Academic Core Building. Mingling will take place from 8:30 until 9:00 with the formal program beginning at 9:00 am sharp. It will end at 10:00 am. For everyone's safety, the college will follow CUNY protocol for entry to the building.

About the Panelists

Sonya Smith

Sonya Smith serves as the State Director of the New York Small Business Development Centers (NY SBDC) hosted by State University of New York (SUNY). Smith is known for bringing together public/private partnerships and creating innovative programs to assist small businesses served by SBDC. She has risen through the ranks SBDC, and is the first woman and first African-American appointed to lead New York’s vast SBDC network in its nearly 40-year history. Smith previously served as the Pennsylvania SBDC’s associate state director of programs and policy.

Prior to this these positions, Smith served as the assistant director of Grants and Sponsored Projects at Kutztown University, and before that, rose through the ranks of Pennsylvania’s SBDC, holding the positions of assistant director, budget analyst, and associate business consultant at the Kutztown University SBDC. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Kutztown University, and a bachelor’s in accounting from Albright College.

Harry Wells

Harry Wells, the Director of the York College Small Business Development Center, has over 25 years of experience in economic development, entrepreneurship and small business management. In his current position, he has counseled thousands of entrepreneurs and assisted in their obtaining millions of dollars in financing for business startup and expansion. In 2007, he published ‘Ten Successful Start-Ups: How Their Setbacks, Management Strategies and Practical Lessons Can Help You Succeed in Business

About the ELB

The York College Executive Leadership Breakfast Series was founded in the 2005 aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Previous speakers have included David Neeleman, founder, and ex-CEO of Jet Blue Airways; William C. Thompson, former New York City Comptroller, now CUNY Board President; Dr. Hank Sheinkopf, York College alumnus, rabbi, and political strategist; Jonathan Mariner, former Major League Baseball CEO, Errol Louis, host of NY1’s “Inside City Hall; Cathy Hochul, then-Lieutenant Governor and now Governor of New York, and numerous others.
