Call for Interns - Food and Nutrition Programs Unit

Public Health Solutions (PHS), one of the largest not-for-profit organizations in New York City and a nationally recognized Public Health Institute (PHI), addresses critical public health needs such as food security and nutrition, women’s reproductive health; early childhood development and family support; and so much more.

Under the PHS Public Health Programs Division, The Food and Nutrition Programs (FANP) Unit staff works to improve health and nutrition, specifically among women, infants, and children. The FANP Unit oversees the organization’s Neighborhood WIC Program, WIC Vendor Management Program, and Cooking Matters initiative, as well as other grant funded projects to increase access to healthy food and nutrition education in target high-need areas. The FANP Unit is now accepting applications for a Summer 2015 internship/practicum position to carry out an assessment of corner stores (“bodegas”) in downtown Jamaica and south Jamaica, Queens, as well as possibly in Corona, Queens.

Responsibilities [may include, but are not limited to]:

  • Complete and track store observation forms
  • Travel to and establish relationships with small business owners in target area
  • Interview business owners and distributors
  • Record, track, and organize data collected
  • Draft reports
  • Communicate regularly with Central Office
  • Assist with community asset mapping, community outreach, and other tasks as needed Time Commitment
  • Approximately 10 – 15 hrs/week (depending on availability) Qualifications
  • Strong conversational & written communication skills
  • Interest in food systems, nutrition, and small business
  • Willing to travel in & around borough of Queens,including being outdoors and walking from corner store to corner store
  • Basic computer skills (email, Google products, MS Office)
  • Ability to speak a foreign language a plus (e.g.Spanish, Bengali, Urdu)
