"The African Diva Project: Paintings by Margaret Rose Vendryes" is at the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art's Beau Rivage Resport & Casino Gallery of African-American Art through March 7.

"African Diva Project" is a creative offshoot of one of Vendryes' works, her 2007 hybridized painting "Donnalyn Summeroe," which was inspired by an image on Donna Summer's "Four Seasons of Love." On the verso for her album, Summer posed as Marilyn Monroe. Vendryes added a paper African mask. From there, Vendryes did the same for more female African-American singers, including Eartha Kitt, Thelma Houston, Tammi Terrell, Irene Cara, Joan Armatrading, Aretha Franklin, Tracy Chapman, Nina Simone and Minnie Riperton.
