STEM Research Program

The College Now STEM Research Academy @ York College is designated to provide high school students with an opportunity to develop essential skills to be strong scientific thinkers by engaging in authentic inquiry-based and research activities.

Selected students will be enrolled in a spring semester research course in local environmental toxicology.  Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the opportunity to participate in York’s Summer STEM Research Academy.

The program is FREE to the students.  College Now covers the cost of tuition, Metro cards, books, lunch, and supplies.  Students will receive a York College CUNY ID card that will provide access to the resources of the college.

Program Description and Schedules

Spring 2016 (Approx. Dates: February – June) – BACKYARD TOXICOLOGY (Two Days/Week. 4:00-5:50 pm, HS Credit) Students will be enrolled in a 54-hour science research course in forensic science that investigates local environmental issues through hands-on exploration and review of the literature. This course will meet on the York College campus.

Students who successfully complete the BACKYARD TOXICOLOGY class will have the opportunity to participate in a more advanced summer STEM research project with college professors.

College Now STEM Research Academy @ York College - Summer 2016 (Approx. Dates: July 5 – August 11

Students will participate in a six-week internships program through which they will be matched with a York College faculty member based on the area of interest.  Students will work in a research lab four days a week (Approx. Times: 9:30 am – 4:00 pm), participate in weekly seminars and discussion groups, and complete a project for presentation.  Students who successfully complete the internship will receive a monetary stipend.

Students will receive

  • $750 stipend
  • Lunch Voucher
  • Free Metrocard

Eligibility

Students must

  • Be a New York City public high school students
  • Have or be close to an 80+ on any Math Regents exam and 75+ on the Living Environment and ELA Regents exams
