Problem-Solving Based "Learning Companions" In K-12

Currently system learning of problem solving is short-changed in most academic setting from pre-K, K-to-12, through college, the professional levels. There is ample evidence that although many students, of diverse backgrounds, are able to learn and “know” concept (“ingredients” in a metaphor of cooking), when they are confronted with specific problems and problem patterns, they are typically unable to recall or extract the appropriate learned knowledge elements that can be integrated into a suitable solution plan, script or strategy. Thus, a concerted and systematic effort is needed in education to focus on learning problem-solving, that is students learning how to solve (academic learning) problems; particularly for the STEM disciplines, topics and subjects.
