The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with advanced
statistical methods for the analysis of data in social research.
Emphasis is placed on the application of these methods to social
problems. This course will build on its prerequisite, 76000-Analysis
of Quantitative Data, will focus on multivariate correlational
analysis and will enhance the students' ability to interpret data
appropriately. Computer analysis of data will be taught as a skill
that intervenes between the conceptualization resulting in the
choice of statistical technique and the conceptual interpretation
of the results of the analysis.

Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, the student should:
1. understand the processes of quantitative research
2. understand how bivariate statistical procedures fit into the
empirical research enterprise
3. understand the concepts involved in the bivariate statistical
procedures most often utilized in social welfare research
4. understand the differential use of various bivariate statistical
procedures depending upon purpose (descriptive, inferential) and
level of measurement
5. be able to carry out bivariate statistical analyses using SPSS
6. be able to interpret the results of bivariate statistical analyses
appropriately
7. know how to write and communicate findings within the context
of the study’s research questions and major practice and
professional issues
8. be a better consumer of research studies by understanding research
processes including the statistics used.
