York College MARC Honors Scholarship Program

The Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program is a federally funded research training program, sponsored by the Minority Opportunities of Research (MORE) branch of The National Institute of General Medical Sciences, within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is part of the Public Health Service (PHS).

The program prepares minority undergraduates (juniors and seniors) for PHD research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, social sciences, and behavioral sciences. Students work with a faculty mentor 20 hours per week on the mentor’s research. Students gain valuable experience in designing, implementing, analyzing and presenting empirical research. This experience is useful in applying to and successfully completing graduate school.

As a faculty mentor in the MARC program, I have had the opportunity to work intensely with students, and to be part of their introduction to research. This relationship is valuable to me as a teacher, because I am able to work with students over a long period of time, and develop a personal mentoring relationship. The personal aspect of the MARC program is its unique feature. Being a part of the program is both personally and professionally rewarding, and I hope to continue to be involved with the MARC program at York College.
