York College is included in CUNY’s "2012 Science All Star Team" ad featuring recent grads throughout the university, who have received prestigious scholarship/fellowships to graduate programs. Kirk Haltaufderhyde, ’11, the York graduate featured in the ad, was a mentee of Biology professor, Gerald McNeil. Kirk was recruited to Brown University by Dr. Andrew Campbell (York, ’81) a professor of Medical Science at the Rhode Island-based Ivy League.
Ezazul Haque, a senior majoring in Environmental Health at York College/CUNY, is having an inspiring spring and summer this year. Haque recently wowed the College community with his presentation on using the nutrition from New York City’s waste water for processing as bio fuel. Equally important, he is concerned with the damage being caused to humans by toxins in the water supply in developing countries such as his homeland of Bangladesh. So between fuel and drinking, his academic focus seems to be all water all the time.
York College three-sport student-athlete Vanessa Rivera has been named one of 29 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Honorable Mention Scholar Athletes for the 2011-12 school year.

The awards were announced just prior to the start of the 2012 CUNYAC championships.
Robert W. Fernandez’ York College journey is turning into quite an exciting trip. This summer the Biotech major will spend several weeks doing research at Princeton University.
Starting Fall 2012, some courses will be charging fees to cover materials, services or transportation related to the courses. Following the model already used by other CUNY colleges, York recently implemented these course fees to defray costs previously covered by the College.

York College junior guard Tony Vails has been named to the 2012 CUNY Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball All-Star team, earning a second-team selection. In addition, senior women’s basketball player Vanessa Rivera was honored with the Burt Beagle Sportsmanship Award. The awards were announced Thursday afternoon during the CUNY Athletic Conference Basketball Press Luncheon.
York College and Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) have done the inevitable. The two downtown Jamaica entities have teamed up to bring outstanding cultural and educational programming to the Queens community. Dr. Ivelaw L. Griffith, York’s Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, is a member of JCAL’s Board of Directors. Among the first of his duties this year will be to moderate a panel discussion following the screening of the film Before They Die, a 92-minute documentary about the survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot.
