York Enrichment Services

York Enrichment Services Program (YES), located in room 1G02 of the Academic Core Building, assists students with disabilities by offering important and needed services to facilitate academic success.

The York Enrichment Services (YES) program is part of the nationwide U. S. Department of Education funded TRIO programs known as Student Support Services (SSS). The program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.  The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and help students make the transition from one level of higher education to the next.

The mission of York Enrichment Services is to assist students with disabilities as they complete their bachelor's degrees. Working with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (OSD), the YES program offers services and accommodations to eligible students. To qualify for the program, a student must have a documented impairment which causes a significant limitation to a major life activity.

There are many different types of disabilities. They may be visible or unseen. Physical and medical conditions, emotional disorders, and learning disabilities are examples of impairments that would qualify a student for disability services. Accommodations can also be made for students with temporary disabilities.

YES participants receive the following free services:

Tutoring

One-on-one and small group tutoring sessions are arranged as needed each semester for general education requirement courses as well as many major courses. In order to receive tutoring you must speak to the YES counselor or the Learning Specialist.

Counseling / Workshops

YES participants are assigned a counselor, who works with the student every semester until graduation. Counselors work with students on academic advisement as well as personal and career concerns. Workshops on topics such as time management are offered each semester to all Y.E.S. participants. Check with the Y.E.S. counselor for a current workshop schedule.

Adaptive Technology and Equipment

Located in room AC-3H05 in the library, York's new Adaptive Technology Center serves all students with disabilities. The Center contains computers with the latest software to assist students. Available software includes:

All our computers have Internet access. The closed circuit televisions (CCTV) increase print size and can change background. The Center's copier zooms material up to 200% larger than the original. In addition, students can borrow equipment such as tape recorders. Individual and group orientation to the Adaptive Technology Center is offered throughout the semester by appointment. Free training is also available to enhance computer and internet skills. You must be a valid member of YES or SSD to use our equipment.

Textbook Loan Program

YES participants can borrow books for the semester for additional savings. This service is provided through our sister program Student Support Services (SSS). In order to access this service you must first see your YES counselor.

Peer Mentoring

Freshmen and new transfer students are welcome to participate in our Peer Mentor Program. The program pairs students of the same major. The pair meets regularly to get new students acclimated to York College. See your YES counselor if you are interested.

Coordination

Coordination of accommodations are arranged with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (Academic Core Building Room 1G02, telephone 718.262.2703) and faculty. See your YES or OSD counselor if you need any accommodations.

Accommodations include:

  • Proctoring

  • Extended time for test taking

  • Counseling - Academic/Career/Personal

  • Referrals

  • Temporary short-term accommodations
