Services & Activities

York College's Student Support Services program offers the following free services and activities.
  • Academic Advisement
  • Personal and Career Counseling
Students enrolled in Student Support Services (SSS) are assigned a counselor. SSS counselors are available to SSS students in need of counseling on a variety of issues, problems and concerns. The SSS counselor provides ongoing academic advisement, orientation and study skills seminars.
  • Peer Mentoring

In an effort to promote multicultural understanding, SSS has mentors on hand to introduce freshman students to York College's facilities, services and resources. This includes on-campus activities and events sponsored by York College's Student Government and other student clubs.

  • One-on-One Tutoring
SSS provides eligible students with tutoring in most academic courses. The tutoring is conducted by high-achieving York students who have demonstrated their academic abilities and have shown a strong desire to help others. Individual or small-group sessions are held in the program's Resource Center, and other designated classrooms on campus, at mutually convenient times. Tutors receive ongoing training and support from SSS staff members.

If you would like to apply to become an SSS member, or if you would like a job as a Tutor (minimum starting hourly wage is $10 per hour), please contact Walter Valero, the SSS Academic Coordinator, in Room AC-3E03. You may also telephone at 718.262.2421 or e-mail wvalero@york.cuny.edu.
  • Computer Resource Room

SSS students have access to a private Computer Resource Room used only by SSS participants. The room is located in the rear of Room AC-3E03 and features new state-of-the-art Dell desktop computers with high speed Internet access and a high speed networked printer. SSS students can drop by, with or without an appointment, to use one of the five computers in the room. SSS students never have to worry about running out of printer paper, losing their work, or operating a computer software program: SSS staff members are always on hand to assist.

  • Computer and Internet Search Skills Training
SSS also realizes the importance of students having basic computer operation and Internet searching skills. Individual computer and online search strategy training is available to all SSS students. This individual training covers the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Training is also available in basic Web page design as well as effective online search strategies.
  • Free Textbooks on Loan
SSS has a volunteer textbook loan program in order to help students obtain expensive textbooks each semester at absolutely no cost. Participants of SSS volunteer their used textbooks to the program. SSS then takes these textbooks and re-distributes them to other SSS participants. By pooling resources from its own participants, SSS has managed to save students hundreds of dollars each semester.
  • Study Skills Workshops

SSS conducts a number of workshops each semester aimed at fostering and facilitating the academic potential and success of SSS students.

    Topics covered include:

    • SSS Blackboard
    • Study Skills
    • Stress Management
    • Choosing a Career
    • Improving your GPA
