Tracy Mejia is a York College junior, pursing a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Health Education K-12. Tracy joined the Trio Student Support Services (SSS) Program in Fall 2011. Since then she has felt welcomed and loved by the staff at SSS. Mejia comes to visit her counselor when she has any questions or doubts about an academic topic or personal issue. She takes full advantage of the services provided to her, including the availabilities in computer lab and reference library. All the support provided by the SSS Program has contributed to several of her academic and personal successes during the 2012-2013 academic years. She has been a Dean’s List recipient for four semesters, corresponding to 2011 Fall/Spring and 2012 Fall/Spring. Enrolling in the SSS program not only provided academic and personal support on a one-on-one basis, but it also softened her transition through college and encouraged her to continue in her development as a role model for other students.
In Spring 2012, Tracy was encouraged by her mentor to apply to the New York Needs You Fellowship (NYNY). Facing her first encounters of lengthy applications, recommendation letters and interviews, she decided to visit Career Services for training and advice in this important process. The staff at Career Services trained Mejia for her interview and advised her on attire and communication at interviews and helped her draft her first resume. She was also referred to Dress for Success, a non-profit organization that provides women applying for internships or jobs with business attire. After a successful application and interview process, Tracy was accepted into the NYNY Fellowship, and is currently a Fellow Ambassador at York College. Learning professional skills and networking through Career Services and NYNY helped her obtain a college assistant position at the York College Testing Center.
