York College of the City University of New York has been selected by the Academy of Applied Sciences to organize and host the 2014 New York City Metro and New York Long Island regions Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (NYCM JSHS and NYLI JSHS).The NYCM JSHS and NYLI JSHS will select the students who will represent their respective regions to the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium organized by the Academy of Applied Sciences. The NYCM JSHS and NYLI JSHS regional Symposia are scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 9, 2014 on York College’s campus in Jamaica, Queens.
All high school students, grades 9-12 from the NYLong Island and NYC Metropolitan areas are eligible to participate in the symposium. All students must submit a research paper which will be reviewed and evaluated by college faculty and practicing scientists and engineers. After evaluation, judging committees of researchers will select the students who submit the best papers and will be invited to participate in the Symposium to make a short seminar presentation on Sunday, February 9, 2014 (12 minute presentation, 6 minute question and answers). Judging committees comprised of college faculty and practicing scientists and engineers, following the guidelines of the Academy of Applied Sciences, will evaluate the presentations and select the high school students (junior scientists) who will represent New York City Metro and NY Long Island regions on the National Symposium. High school students will be eligible for awards according to the Academy of Applied Sciences policies.
No Team Presentations.
Students who worked as a team or a group that wish to submit a research paper must choose one presenter to represent them in the regional and national symposia. There cannot be multiple entries and multiple presenters for one research project.
Only the invited student JSHS NYC Metro and NY Long Island 2014 Semifinalists will present.
The mission of the NYC Metro and NY Long Island regional JSHS is to:
- Promote research and scholarship in the sciences, engineering and mathematics.
- Recognize and reward research and scholarly achievements.
- Network to enrich understanding of research and scholarly pursuits beyond high school.
- Advance in local, regional, national and international symposia.
- Develop skills to help prepare for undergraduate and graduate studies; to apply scientific concepts and principles to solve problems; to gain/create new knowledge; and to engage in presentations and writing.
New York City Metro and NY Long Island regional JSHS is sponsored by the research arm of the Department of Defense through the Academy of Applied Sciences.
