For the past 23 years I have been an emergency nurse. My most recent experience has been the nurse educator in the emergency department of a Level I Trauma Center. In 2007 I completed my doctorate degree. I conducted a qualitative study that focused on coping strategies of emergency nurses when faced with traumatic and violent events. The title of my dissertation: “Experiences of emergency nurses: What has been learned from traumatic and violent events?” Over the past 10 years I have done both clinical and didactic teaching as an adjunct faculty member for various undergraduate and graduate programs. My undergraduate experience ranged from fundamentals of nursing to overseeing senior practicum students. On the graduate level I have taught a research course. When I first started in nursing my mother gave me the book “The Little Engine That Could.” It has been my mantra during my journey. I am fortunate to be able to share this with the students at York College.
