Beloved Colleague Professor Taen-Yu Dai
Dr. Dai came to York in 1972 after completing his Doctorate Degree in Mathematics from the University of New Mexico and was an accomplished scholar. He was an algebraist, with an interest in Partially Ordered Linear Algebras, with publications in prestigious journals of the American Mathematical Society. He served as Chair from 1987 to 1990.
Dr. Dai will be long remembered for his mentoring of faculty (not only in the Math/CS Department) and students, and his "beyond the call of duty" support of his students and York alumni. He spent huge amounts of time in his office, door open to talk with faculty and students alike, always willing to share his insights into mathematics, the world and life. Dr. Dai's enthusiasm and skill as a teacher resulted in many choosing Mathematics/CS as a career who otherwise would not have done so.
Dr. Dai was very proud of his Taiwanese/Chinese background and was very active in Chinese heritage activities of the College. He was involved with visits to China to support the teaching of and research in mathematics there.
Our hearts go out to his wife, daughter and son, extended family, current and former students, and friends on the loss of such an extraordinary human being.
Dr. Dai's family has indicated that it was his wish to set up a scholarship fund for students. Donations should be made payable to the York College Foundation with a notation on the memo of the check or in a cover note that the contributions are in memory of Dr. Dai. They should be mailed to the York College Foundation, 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd., #AC-2H03, Jamaica, NY 11451.
