Vanessa Rivera Named CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete

York College three-sport student-athlete Vanessa Rivera has been named one of 29 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Honorable Mention Scholar Athletes for the 2011-12 school year.

Rivera will be honored at the 26th Annual Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Dinner on May 16 at 6:00 p.m. at Queens College.

Rivera played three sports this season (soccer, basketball, softball), all while maintaining a 3.4 GPA as a Physical Education, K-12 major. During the Spring semester, she somehow managed to maintain her GPA and compete in softball, all while taking part in a demanding teaching internship at the Scholar Academy in Queens, which required her to work from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day of the week.

The Queens native biggest contribution athletically came with the basketball team, where she started 14 games and averaged 3.5 points and 1.3 assists per contest. In soccer, she split time as a goalie and a midfielder and in softball she was the teams’ starting right fielder. Earlier this season, Rivera was named the winner of the Burt Beagle CUNYAC Women’s Basketball Sportsmanship award.

Rivera was also recently featured on the Cardinals Spotlight, which is York’s weekly athletics radio show. You can listen to her interview here.

The pool of scholar-athletes was selected from the nine CUNY Athletic Conference senior colleges and the five community colleges. The athletic directors of each school voted on the winners. Four Scholar-Athletes of the Year were selected (one male and female from both the senior and community colleges). Vladislav Romanov, a swimmer from the College of Staten Island and Mallory Grubler, a women’s volleyball player form Hunter College were named the senior college Scholar Athletes of the Year. Following their selection, 29 other CUNYAC athletes were selected as honorable mention winners.

Looking for ACTORS who can talk fast, move fast, and be FUNNY !! The play is set in Paris during the roaring 20’s. WWI is over, Ragtime Jazz is in, and Josephine Baker is the toast of French Théâtre.

Raymonde Chandebise, after years of wedded bliss, begins to doubt the fidelity of her husband, Victor Emmanuel, who has suddenly become sexually inactive. Raymonde is unaware that his behavior is due to a nervous condition. She confides her doubts to her old friend Lucienne, who suggests a trick to test him. They write him a letter, in Lucienne’s handwriting, from a fictitious and anonymous admirer, requesting a rendezvous at the Hotel Coq d’Or, an establishment with a dubious reputation, but a large and prominent clientele. Raymonde intends to confront her husband there, and she and Lucienne leave to do so.

When Victor Emmanuel receives the letter, however, he has no interest in such an affair and believes the invitation from the mysterious woman was meant for his best friend Tournel, a handsome bachelor. Unknown to Victor Emmanuel, Tournel has his eye on Raymonde and eagerly exits to make the appointment.

Camille, the young nephew of Victor Emmanuel, is overjoyed to have his speech impediment corrected by a new silver palate from Dr. Finache. In celebration, he and the household cook, Antoinette, also hurry to the Hotel Coq d’Or, followed by Etienne, Antoinette's jealous husband. Dr. Finache decides to go to the hotel in search of his own afternoon rendezvous.

Victor Emmanuel shows the letter to Lucienne’s husband, Carlos Homenides de Histangua, a passionate and violent Spaniard. Carlos recognizes Lucienne’s handwriting and assumes that she is trying to start an affair with Victor Emmanuel. He runs off to the hotel, vowing to kill her. Victor Emmanuel, hoping to prevent the threatened murder, hurries off in pursuit.

The various characters arrive in search of their goals: Finache for fun; Raymonde for Victor Emmanuel; Tournel for Raymonde; Camille with Antoinette, followed by Etienne; Carlos for Lucienne; and Victor Emmanuel to stop Carlos.

Carlos, attempting to kill his wife, shoots at anything that moves. Victor Emmanuel sees Raymonde talking with Tournel and believes she is unfaithful. Victor Emmanuel is believed to be insane when Poche, an alcoholic porter at the hotel who is a dead ringer for Victor Emmanuel, is mistaken for him. Camille loses his palate, and Tournel tries very hard to seduce Raymonde.

The confusion persists even after all are reunited again at Victor Emmanuel’s house. Things begin to clear up when Carlos discovers a rough copy of the letter written by Lucienne on Raymonde’s desk, this one in Raymonde’s handwriting. The owner of the hotel comes by to return an article left behind by a member of the household and clears up the confusion between his porter and Victor Emmanuel. Finally, Raymonde tells Victor Emmanuel the cause of her suspicions, and he assures her that he will put an end to her doubts—tonight.

La Luz de Un Cigarrillo: Una Historia Dominican-York is a new play about a portrayal of a young gay man and his conservative, Dominican mother, and the proverbial tensions that arise when their two worlds meet. However, this play focuses not on the issue of coming out to one's parent, but rather, the strength of the roots that connect a mother and her son. The play is written using Dominican and Dominican/York vernacular terms: This is a mixture of the native Dominican language mixed in with that of a person who has lived many years in New York City and has created their own street vernacular. Many of the Dominican and English words used have missing letters or are misspelled. This is done on purpose.

This was not at all the case at the York College Monthly Tensor Talk given on February 16, 2012. There, Dr. James Sellers was able to strike a balance with a fun and interactive talk that was not too overbearing and yet full of mathematical results that were nothing short of outstanding. One of the main reasons why he was able to strike this balance is because he is a man many responsibilities. Professionally, he is Director of undergraduate studies, professor at Penn State University, administrator, researcher, and writer. Personally he is a husband, father of five, assistant football coach and webmaster for three different organizations.

Dr. Sellers’s talk focused on the cool and unexpected connections between compositions and the Fibonacci. A composition of an integer n is a partition of n where the order of the parts matters. Dr. Sellers used simple calculations and example to discover formulas beginning with how to find the number of compositions there are for a given natural number. For example, the number of compositions of the number 3, represented by C(3), can be found using the formula c(n) = 2n-1which he derived and then proved with the help of those in attendance. Next, he showed how the composition of an integers and Fibonacci numbers are related.

At the end of the presentation Dr. Sellers hammered home the point that the Fibonacci Numbers keep appearing in compositions of integers in interesting ways and as result that he believes we should pay more attention to these numbers. He left the audience with several questions to investigate based on the work presented. After the talk Dr. Sellers generously spent time with Tensor Scholars students joining them for dinner at a nearby restaurant. Dr. Sellers was in New York to give a lecture at the CUNY Graduate Center and was invited by Dr. Rishi Nath whose research also deals with integer partitions and Dr. Lidia Gonzalez to give a lecture at York College as part of his NY trip.

York College freshman outside hitter, Edner Geffard has been named the 2012 CUNY Athletic Conference Men’s Volleyball Rookie of the Year and junior opposite hitter Bryan Williams has earned a Second-Team All-Star selection. The awards were announced just prior to the start of the 2012 CUNYAC championships.

Geffard had not only one of the best freshman seasons in York history, but one of the best seasons of any York volleyball player ever. As of April 15, the Haiti native was sitting among the nation’s best in several statistical categories. He ranks seventh in kills per set (3.77), 16th in aces per set (.44) and 27th in hitting percentage (.311). Among CUNYAC athletes, he is first in kills, third in blocks (.65), fifth in hitting percentage and sixth in aces.

During the season, Geffard took home the first seven CUNYAC Rookie of the Week awards. He missed out on the last two but only had one match during that time span. He led the Cardinals to a 19-14 mark—their best record since 1996—and a berth in their fourth straight CUNYAC semifinal.

Williams had a breakout season for the Cardinals in his junior year. The Brooklyn native ranks third in the conference in kills per set (3.03) and ninth in hitting percentage (.234). He earned a CUNYAC Player of the Week selection during the period ending March 4. During that week he had a pair of 20+ kill performances including a match in which he had 23 kills and a .759 hitting percentage. He was also named to the CUNYAC All-Tournament team after a 16-kill performance in the semifinal round against Baruch College.

It is the second straight year York has won the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year. Former Cardinal, Ahmed Helmi took the honors last season.

Hunter College’s Christopher Newcomb and Ray Bello were named CUNYAC Player of the Year and Coach of the Year respectively.

Biotech major set for summer at Princeton and Research Day at Columbia

Robert W. Fernandez’ York College journey is turning into quite an exciting trip. This summer the Biotech major will spend several weeks doing research at Princeton University.

“I will be part of a research group headed by a faculty member in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Molecular and Quantitative & Computational Biology,” says Fernandez. “I will receive intensive laboratory research experience, will collaborate with other graduate/post-doctoral fellows, will be part of research discussion groups, attend career forums, and present my research in a poster session.”

His research abstract has also been accepted for a poster presentation and PowerPoint discussion at Columbia University’s Undergraduate Science Journal Symposium, this spring. The annual event “aims to establish a forum for the display of outstanding undergraduate research to be viewed by faculty and students of pre-eminent Northeastern region research institutions,” according to the university.

Fernandez’ abstract, “Loss of Function and Overexpression of VMAT Suggest that the Levels of Dopamine Signaling Correlate with the Capacity to Avoid Social Stress Signals in Drosophila Melanogaster,” was originally submitted to the Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal and inspired the invitation to present at the Ivy League institution.

He will also present his research at York’s Undergraduate Research Day to be hosted in the York College Health and Physical Education Complex on April 19th.

Although everything seems to be coming up roses for Fernandez this spring, it wasn’t always that way. He has had to deal with thorny issues in his life and fight for every success he has achieved.

Born in Lima, Peru, Fernandez, his younger brother and their parents, came to the United States in 1994 when he was four years old. The family settled in Elizabeth, New Jersey. It wasn’t until he was a high school senior preparing for college that Fernandez realized that his immigration status was “undocumented.” Rutgers and other senior colleges in New Jersey rejected the honor student on that basis.

He turned to the community colleges and graduated with honors from Union Community College in Cranford, New Jersey with an associate’s degree in Business. He then spent a year at Queens College but transferred to York the following year in 2010.

“I took a biology class at Union County College and it changed my mindset towards Biology,” Fernandez recently recalled. “When I first arrived at York College I doubted if this was the right choice for me, but Dr. Louis Levinger advised me; and I left convinced that this college was very student-oriented and the science professors here were very open.”

Fernandez has been guided in the lab by Dr. Anne Simon whose research “aims at understanding the molecular mechanisms relevant to complex behavior in adult organisms.”

“It focuses on Drosophila melanogaster as an animal model,” says Dr. Simon who recently presented in her research area at a recent Provost Lecture Series forum. “I apply the tools of genetics to study behaviors ranging from learning and memory to social interaction.”

Simon has enjoyed guiding the young scholar.

“Robert is very sharp, serious and extremely dedicated in addition to being very good at the bench,” says Dr. Simon. “He no doubt has the qualities required to succeed in a PhD program. I also think that he will succeed at any endeavor that he will decide to pursue. I'd be proud to be a colleague of his in the future.”

After his first semester at York, Fernandez founded the Biotechnology Club at the college in order to help guide students through their major and inform them on the opportunities available at this school. He credits much of his success to the devotion of his mother.

“My mother worked up to 60 hours per week to take care of us,” he says. “She is responsible for the man I am today. And I try to be a role model for my younger brother to show him that despite several hardships, one should not give up on their dreams. However, as for my success at York College, I attribute that to the opportunities York College gave me, to the mentoring I received from Dr. Levinger and Dr. Simon from the Biology Dept. as well as from Dr. Lynch from the Physics Dept., and to my friends who have been there for me every step of the way.”

The soft spoken go-getter does not qualify for financial aid so he has two tutoring jobs on campus. He tutors in the Academic Achievement Center and for the Physics Department. Due to this busy schedule his GPA recently slipped from a perfect 4.0 to approximately 3.93, to his dismay.

Fernandez who is “about four classes” short of his bachelor’s degree, plans to pursue a PhD in Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or Biotechnology and do research in the area of stem cell research.

It is an area that matters so much to Fernandez that it was the topic of his Writing 303 term paper. Furthermore, this past winter he spent a week at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with another York undergraduate and a graduate student from Levinger’s lab at York - on a week-long trip with Professor Levinger, who had completed post-doctoral studies there.

Fernandez presented at MIT on the topic he had pursued there – genetics. He also went to Brown University with several other York students. They met with Dr. Andrew Campbell, a professor of Medical Science in the Department of Molecular Microbiology at Brown, who has recruited several biology majors from York over the last five years. Campbell is a member of York’s Class of 1980 and serves as a member of the York College Foundation.

Fernandez, according to Princeton University, will join “a world-class research group” headed by a HYPERLINK "http://molbio.princeton.edu/faculty/molbio-faculty?layout=blog"Faculty member and will carry out an original research project. “Participants are immersed in a culture of close collaboration with other undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty, and thereby experience first-hand what it is like to be a scientist.”

He credits Simon for being a tough taskmaster.

“I am honored and privileged to have her as a mentor,” he says. “And I’m excited that I have a mentor who pushes me hard to succeed.”

English Department Adjunct Publishes Profound Poetry

Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie, an adjunct professor in York’s English Department, recently published her first book of poetry.

Karma’s Footsteps while small in page numbers packs a wallop in content. It covers a range of topics so perfectly constructed it announces that a profound new voice has just been detonated in the canon of contemporary literature.

Themes range from “blinded compromise” in “Her Voice” to lynchings in Mississippi in “I Was There” and are poignant and evocative. “Forced Entry,” powerfully employs metaphor to address the psychological damage of rape and induce empathy with the victim in the poem:

“He broke into me-/stole something,/Brazen thief/Never charged with forced entry,/and no one sees the bruise prints/the scratch marks on my spirit-these don’t make police reports./The dignity missing from my step/doesn’t qualify as physical evidence….”

And while Tallie started life as a girl in Lefrak City housing in Queens, her sensibilities as an adult have also been shaped by a larger world view. She has taught at Rundu College of Education in the African nation of Namibia; and participated in poetry readings in Amsterdam where she has also lived for a year and a half. She has worked in London as a poetry coach at Hackney Secondary School, and in Belgium. Back in the United States she has taught at Medgar Evers College and taught a course at Pratt Institute, before coming to York.

The book was a labor of love for its enchanting author.

“It took six years between acceptance [of the manuscript] and publication,” said Tallie. “I had a baby then moved from Belgium back to New York.”

Ekere Tallie studied radio, TV and film at Clark Atlanta University where she earned her undergraduate degree. She later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction Writing from Mills College in Oakland, California. At York she teaches English 125 and fittingly, English 200, Understanding Literature.

“The York College English Department is privileged to have Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie, a powerfully talented poet and teacher, on our faculty,” said Dr. Linda Grasso, chairperson. “Professor Tallie's passionate belief that writing matters because it enables creativity, hope, healing, and historical memory, inspires students to care about language, and what language makes possible. ‘It is writing/despite the facts/to create new ones.’”

Tallie, a budding herbalist, has received funding for her research from Queens Council of the Arts and traces her literary influence to the Black Arts Movement, among others. But before the publication of her first collected works, some of Tallie’s poems had already been featured in several anthologies including Listen Up! and Def Jam Poetry. The mother of two young daughters also produces poetry videos with her husband. Her productivity bodes well for her department according to Grasso.

“Professor Tallie is a wonderful role model, showing students that they can succeed academically and creatively if they are ‘like bamboo,’ bending and not breaking, bouncing back ‘not always graceful/but taller/always taller,’ ultimately realizing they can ‘choose to stand again.’"

The Cricket Club at York College has won the 2012 American College Cricket Championship. York defeated the University of South Florida in the finals on March 18 to win its first-ever national title.

York outlasted 27 other teams who competed in the American College Cricket Championship, defeating a number of big-name schools in the process. They took down Auburn University, University of Houston-Clearlake, and NYU-Polytechnic to reach the quarterfinal round. From there they defeated Cleveland State to advance to the Final Four.

In the semifinal round, they bested another well-known school, defeating Texas A&M. The top-ranked Aggies came into the match with a perfect record on the season.

This set up a championship match with perennial powerhouse, the University of South Florida, who has reached the Final Four in three of the past four seasons. York was not to be denied and defeated the Bulls to take home the title. York’s Suleman Mohammed was named the Finals MVP.

The York College Cricket Club, along with York College President Marcia Keizs was presented with the championship trophy on April 3 in the Atrium of the Academic Core Building. TV Asia, which broadcasted the Final Four matches, was on hand to televise the event. They conducted interviews with the players and with President Keizs. The interviews will be aired on TV Asia at a time to be announced. In addition, the championship match will be re-aired on Saturday, April 6 on TVAsia. TVAsia is available with most cable providers in the USA and Canada and on The Dish Network.

American College Cricket was founded in October of 2008. Each year, they hold the National Championship in Florida during Spring Break. The organization has over 50 teams and is growing each year.
