What is PCMCIA?
Short for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, and pronounced as separate letters, PCMCIA is an organization consisting of some 500 companies that has developed a standard for small, credit card-sized devices, called PC Cards. Many people call PC Cards by the longer name PCMCIA cards. The association has trademarked the term PC Card, however, so that's the preferred usage. PC Cards (Type II cards) are thicker (5.0mm) and often are used for modems and LAN adapters.
