In barely three weeks beginning in mid-August, four hurricanes -- Fay, Gustav, Hannah and Ike -- lashed Haiti, Cuba and several other countries in the Caribbean causing extremely widespread damage. Preoccupied with the elections in the United States and the unfolding global fi nancial crisis, the international community barely took notice of the Katrina-like conditions now prevailing. With this informational session, the presenters (Note: Dr. Schuller just returned from Haiti) will update York College students, faculty, and residents in the community of the recent havoc, discuss the countries’ different vulnerabilities, and make a case for greater public attention to the dire conditions of our neighbors in the region.
