Many believe the bulk of the Dominican American experience in New York City lies in Washington Heights, but in the unexpected corners of now gentrified upper mid-town are remnants of what once was: Lucecita Ortensia Cruz is one of only a handful of Dominican immigrants that stubbornly remains in this neighborhood.

A sudden death in the family forces her son, Julio César, to return to the City after a five year self-imposed absence.  In the course of two nights they attempt to rekindle the love and appreciation for each other and their Dominican roots.  But hidden secrets are unexpectedly revealed and threaten to destroy an already thin bond.

Muchos creen que la mayor parte de la experiencia dominicana se encuentra en la ciudad de NuevaYork en Washington Heights, pero aun queda una huella de lo que antes fue en las equinas distinguidas del upper mid-town. Jones, built by York College students under the direction of CLT Garth Belcon.  It also features the vivid lighting of guest designer, Daniel Winter.  CLT, Jessica Pecharsky, member of Actor’s Equity Association, rounds off the list as production/stage manager and choreographer.

The cast of LA LUZ DE UN CIGARRILLO features a cast of 4 talented students: Francis Madi, Daniel Anthony Hidalgo, Fior Peralta and Katherine Rodriguez.

Performances in English begin October 26 at 4PM, and continue running on October 27 at 2PM; and October 30 at 12noon.  Performances in Spanish begin October 27 at 8PM; October 28 at 3pm; and conclude November 1 at 12noon.

Come meet the playwright, Marco Antonio Rodriguez, on October 26 and October 27 immediately following the performance.

He's called upon to play everything from jazz to R&B/Pop to Latin to symphonic to Broadway, and everything in between. Since his arrival on the New York scene he's worked with such jazz greats as; Art Blakey, Benny Carter, Jon Faddis, Chico Freeman, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Harper, Joe Henderson, Mongo Santamaria, Henry Threadgill, Steve Turre, and Randy Weston. He's currently leading a quartet, a quintet, a Latin/Brasilian project and a large ensemble which brings together acoustic and electric/electronic instruments. He also leads a big band which not only plays his compositions and arrangements, but also the music of such jazz greats.

Prosody 400 refers to the unique rehearsal workshop created by York College’s theatre and music disciplines; “prosody” means “the metrics of verse,” and with it students find an open creative place to discuss and develop their personal responses to the elements and power of poetic expression. The result is a performance at the intersection of words and music, where thoughts turn sharp, and emotion is running against the light…

]]> No publisher Miguel Bernard Performance Performing Arts Performing and Fine Arts Current Student 2012-02-23T22:39:05Z Event HeartBeat March 18th http://www.york.cuny.edu/events/heartbeat-march-18th After the original and wildly hilarious SlapDash, followed by Shakespeare’s brutally tragic Macbeth, York College Theatre continues its 2011-12 Season this winter with HeartBeat, a special original performance created entirely by the poems and music of 11 York students: Emmanuela Accimeus, Ludma Delva, Ariel Flores, Uchenna Ijeaku, Kyle Jackson, Darius Nazario, Ayush Prasad, Beonca Rosado, Ian Stephens, Phil Williams and Rick Furel.

Prosody 400 refers to the unique rehearsal workshop created by York College’s theatre and music disciplines; “prosody” means “the metrics of verse,” and with it students find an open creative place to discuss and develop their personal responses to the elements and power of poetic expression. The result is a performance at the intersection of words and music, where thoughts turn sharp, and emotion is running against the light…

Assistant Professor Tom Marion directs. Tom Zlabinger is Music Director; he also performs electric guitar, along with Ayush Pasad on bass and Rick Furel on djembe. Set Design is by David Jones, Lighting Design by Daniel Winters.

CLT Jessica Morales, member of Actors Equity Association, is Production/Stage Manager; CLT G. Lawrence Belcon is the Technical Director. Theatre major Ryshon Shepherd is Assistant Stage Manager; Shonique Tiffany Salmon is Dramaturg.
