Students must prepare a solo piece of their choosing (does not have to be jazz) and sight read a passage. Drums and bari sax (without mouthpiece) will be provided. All other instrumentalists must provide their own horn.

SJP '08 is an intensive jazz performance program that runs June 30 - August 7, Mondays - Thursdays @ 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. and is a scholarship program for sophomore and junior NYC public high school musicians made possible by College Now and the City of New York. Upon completion, students earn 5 college credits that can be transferred with them when they attend college. This will be SJP's fourth summer and we have performances on the East River at Gantry Park (July 29) and at the Louis Armstrong House in celebration of Satchmo's birthday (August 2), plus a home concert at the York College Performing Arts Center (August 7). Those accepted will rehearse in a professional, big band environment, and get one-on-one training from professional musicians. Students will also receive a metro card plus lunch vouchers for the duration of the program.

You can find more about the program, including this summer's faculty, at:

http://www.myspace.com/yorkcollegesummerjazzprogram
