York Mathematicians Set To Host Visiting Scholars

Dr. Rishi Nath, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and the director of Undergraduate Research at York, Dr. Lidia Gonzalez and Dr. Christopher Hanusa, a Queens College colleague, will host several mathematicians from across the country and the world for conference at York.

Billed as QUANTUM an acronym made up by Professor Nath, meaning Queens Algebra, Number Theory for Undergraduates in Mathematics [Day], the mathematics conference is being sponsored by an National Science Foundation (NSF) grant secured by Dr. Nath, primary investigator, and Dr. Alex Ryba, a Queens College colleague, who served as Nath’s Co-PI..

The group coming to York is part of a larger contingency of mathematicians coming from such universities as Princeton, University of Paris, University of Melbourne, Yale University, Dartmouth College, University of London, SUNY-Buffalo. That event, billed as “New York Workshop on the Symmetric Groups & Related Topics,” is taking place this week at the CUNY Graduate Center.

“There is something new happening here,” said Nath, adding that they tied the program to Professor Gonzalez’s Tensor Program [at York] and picked five junior members from the larger group of faculty invited to a larger conference they are conducting at the Graduate Center, to come to York. Each will give a half hour talk to York’s students, providing them a foretaste of “what up-and-coming mathematics faculty are studying,” according to Nath.

“It’s the best minds from around the world coming here to interact in an intimate setting with the best young mathematical minds at York and Queens Colleges,” said Nath, who revealed that Professor Hanusa’s class from QC will be joining York students for the event as well.
Among those coming to York are Jean-Baptiste Gramain (University of Paris), John Enyang (University of Sydney); Karl Manlburg (Princeton University), Rosa Orellana (Dartmouth College).

Afterwards they will all retreat to a banquet at Sangria Tapas, a popular Portuguese eatery on Sutphin Boulevard.
