York's Women Volleyball will also play against College of Staten Island. (Game Starts at 7pm) During timeouts and in breaks in the action, the college will announce factual information about breast cancer to help bring awareness to fans, student-athletes, and faculty. 

Health educators will also be on hand to provide giveaways and information pamphlets about Breast Cancer. There  will also be a question and answer session before the match. 

 “I lost my sister to breast cancer last year,” said head women’s volleyball coach Andre M. Titus, Jr.  “Both coach [Tracey] Marshall and I have family members who were diagnosed, treated, and survived the illness.  So a few years ago, the women's softball team did a simple pink wristband handout after a game. It was touching, but what made it so meaningful was each young ladies acknowledgement: that this was a deadly, but treatable and curable disease with early detection.”

 “Since the month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the women's volleyball team has decided to go one step further,” added Titus.  “We want to reach out and educate as many people as possible. We have a great fan base and we believe that this is one way to give something back.”

Pamela Goodrich, a community counselor, along with volleyball coach Andre M. Titus Jr. and athletic trainer Dan Matte will discuss various health topics such as HIV awareness, drug and alcohol abuse and nutrition. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a raffle at the end of the session with the winner receiving a free iPod shuffle! Student-athletes are encouraged to attend but all are welcome. Following the seminar, the Cardinals men’s volleyball team will host Polytechnic at 7:00 p.m. “I hope to help educate students on harm reduction so they can lead a better life,” said Matte. No publisher John scarinci Athletics 2009-01-22T20:25:05Z Event York Athletics To Hold 80'S Dance-A-Thon To Benefit "Samaritan's Feet" http://www.york.cuny.edu/events/york-athletics-to-hold-802019s-dance-a-thon-to-benefit-201csamaritan2019s-feet201d The York College Student Athletics Advisory Committee, together with the York Athletics program, will hold an 80’s Dance-a-thon on Friday November 5th at 7:00 p.m. 50 percent of the proceeds from the event will go to the couple that can dance the longest, while the other 50 percent will go to "Samaritan’s Feet," an organization dedicated to distributing footwear to underprivileged children around the world. The event, which is open to the public and will be held in the York College Gymnasium, will go throughout the night into Saturday or until the last couple is left standing on the dance floor.  The cost is $20 per couple in advance and $25 at the door.   Refreshments will be served.  People who attend are asked to wear 80’s clothes, although many different types of music will be played throughout the evening.

York Athletics will also be accepting children’s sneakers as donations to Samaritan’s Feet.  The sneakers must be new in order to be sent overseas.  For more information on Samaritan’s Feet, visit their web site at www.samaritansfeet.org.
