Power Interruption

Please be advised that electrical power will be turned off at 8:00 am on Friday, November 26, 2010 in the entire Academic Core, Performing Arts Center and the Health and Physical Education Complex. The interruption is intended to test the emergency generator under load. Equipment and areas served by the emergency generator are expected to be unaffected. These include elevators, lighting in staircases, emergency lighting and exit signs. Only essential personnel will be permitted on campus on Friday, November 26.

The test is expected to be 4-6 hours in duration and power is expected to be restored around 2:00 pm.

The college's telephone land lines, web site, e-mail and internet
servers will all be disrupted during the power interruption, including
e-mail and Blackberry mail service. Cell phones, including text
messaging, will, however, not be affected. While the interruption is
scheduled to begin at 8:00 am its impact on IT services will begin
around 6:30 am and is expected to be restored fully by 4:00 pm.

To the extent that it is feasible to do so, it is recommended that
all electrical equipment in your office or lab be turned off before you
leave for the Thanksgiving Holiday as a precaution against an electrical
surge when power is restored. If there is research or other equipment,
animals, or perishable refrigerated items in your area that are likely
to be affected by the interruption, please take the necessary
precautions to minimize any potential risk of damage or loss. Please
contact the Helpdesk at extension 5300 if assistance is needed to secure
your lab or office equipment.

If you need to contact Public Safety in the event of an emergency,
please dial (646) 483-3890 as the college's telephone land lines will
not be working during the power interruption. Service to the regular
Public Safety telephone number will resume in the late afternoon on
November 26.

If there are specific concerns about how the interruption may affect your area, please contact Mr. Noel Gamboa at ngamboa@york.cuny.edu.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

More than ten months since Haiti’s devastating earthquake that killed 300,000 and made 1.5 million homeless, the majority of people are living in substandard conditions that are violations of international human rights conventions. The cholera epidemic and the hurricanes and tropical storms that continue to batter the region expose the fragility of life under ripped tents, where many are without clean drinking water or adequate sanitation. Women are exposed to gender-based violence in ever-greater numbers. Come hear a range of on-the-ground efforts, activists, and research to find out what exactly is going on, and what can be done to help, while the U.S. Congress finishes its session and before the national elections scheduled in Haiti for November 28.

This program promotes and raises awareness of current issues related to human rights within the college and the larger community. It coincides with the celebration of World Mental Health Day. It hopes to promote suicide prevention as an integral part of York's ongoing campus activities and services. The event will present a recognizable picture of depression and other problems associated with suicide, as they are commonly experienced by college students and other young adults.

It aims to:

identify cultural barriers to suicide prevention;

create public awareness of depression as treatable and suicide as preventable; and

discuss the clinical and global aspects of suicide.
