Mother's love knows no boundaries... After a five-year self-imposed absence, Julio César, a young man with a buried secret, returns home after the death of his father. Over the course of two evenings, mother and son, two estranged generations of Dominicans living in a now gentrified upper west side, attempt to rekindle the love and appreciation for each other and their roots; but Julio César soon realizes he isn’t the only one with a secret. Unexpected revelations threaten to destroy an already thin bond between mother and child.

by Marco Antonio Rodríguez

Directed by Timothy J. Amrhein

Many believe the bulk of the Dominican American experience in New York City lies in Washington Heights, but in the unexpected corners of now gentrified upper mid-town are remnants of what once was: Lucecita Ortensia Cruz is one of only a handful of Dominican immigrants that stubbornly remains in this neighborhood.

A sudden death in the family forces her son, Julio César, to return to the City after a five year self-imposed absence. In the course of two nights they attempt to rekindle the love and appreciation for each other and their Dominican roots. But hidden secrets are unexpectedly revealed and threaten to destroy an already thin bond.

Under the direction of Professor Timothy J. Amrhein, this production will feature the evocative set designs of David T. Jones, built by York College students under the direction of CLT Garth Belcon. It also features the vivid lighting of guest designer, Daniel Winter. CLT, Jessica Pecharsky, member of Actor’s Equity Association, rounds off the list as production/stage manager and choreographer.

African American Resource Center presents: Book Release - Killing with Kindness: Haiti, International aid, and NGOs

After Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, over half of U.S. households donated to thousands of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in that country. Yet we continue to hear stories of misery from Haiti. Why have NGOs failed at their mission? Set in Haiti during the 2004 coup and aftermath and enhanced by research conducted after the 2010 earthquake, Killing with Kindness analyzes the impact of official development aid on recipient NGOs and their relationships with local communities. Written like a detective story, the book offers rich enthnographic comparisons of two Haitian women’s NGOs working in HIV/AIDS prevention, one with public funding (including USAID), the other with private European NGO partners. Mark Schuller looks at participation and autonomy, analyzing donor policies that inhibit these goals. He focuses on NGOs’ roles as intermediaries in “gluing” the contemporary world system together and shows how power works within the aid system as these intermediaries impose interpretations of unclear mandates down the chain—a process Schuller calls “trickle-down imperialism.”

MARK SCHULLER is former coordinator of the African American Resource Center at York College, CUNY. A writer for Huffington Post, he is the coeditor of four books, including Tectonic Shifts: Haiti since the Earthquake, and codirector of the documentary film Poto Mitan: Haitian Women, Pillars of the Global Economy. His scholarly work has been published in twenty peer reviewed articles or book chapters, and he is actively involved in Haiti solidarity efforts.
