Macbeth Dec 10th http://www.york.cuny.edu/events/macbeth-dec-10 After starting off the 2011-12 season with Associate Professor Tim Amrhein’s fun, witty, and raucous improvisation comedy SlapDASH, The York College Theatre changes course, presenting one of Shakespeare’s most brutal tragedies, Macbeth. Macbeth is a tale that speaks to us today as its story is continually played out on the streets of our own neighborhoods. Desire, betrayal, guilt, and revenge- “Macbeth” follows the actions of an ambitious young man, his lust for success, and his ultimate need to understand himself and what it truly is to “be a man.”

With swordfights, witchcraft, suspense, crime, and passion, this production is action-packed— a great introduction to Shakespeare, and appropriate for kids ages 9 and up.

The cast features 22 York students: Alix Balan, Malika Alami-Binani, Kimberly Ferrer, Ariel Flores, Freddy Gonzalez, Janell Henry, Uchenna Ijeaku, Dominique Jamison, Shatiek Johnson, Cookie LaRode, Jarrel Lynch, Sebrena Mason, La-Toya Mason, Oyinkansola Ogunleye, Kazeem Oni, Ayush Prasad, Stephanie Rivera, Mohamed Roshan, Shonique Tiff Salmon, Ryshon Shepherd, Sabrina Thomas, and Phil Williams.

Assistant Professor Tom Marion directs, and Adjunct Assistant Professor David Jones lends his talents as Scenic Artist. Daniel Winters is guest Lighting Designer; Ana Milosevic, guest Set Designer; and Al Morales, guest Fight Choreographer.

He attended the prestigious Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, studied with Simon Karasick and Dave Schechter at Stony Brook University, and graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in 1978.

Clifton’s career reflects work with a “who’s who” of diverse musical giants including Frank Foster, McCoy Tyner, Clifford Jordan, Stevie Wonder, Dizzy Gillespie, Merv Griffin, The Mighty Sparrow, Lester Bowie, Paul Simon, Muhal Richard Abrams, WyClef Jean, and Dionne Warwick among others. Shaw provides a wonderful example of how jazz is done right. Critics say he is “the real deal”. The Philadelphia-based and Grammy nominated alto saxophonist delivers a level of maturity and awareness inspired by his long tenure with the Mingus Big Band and most recently, the Roy Haynes Quartet.

Zora gained fame as a writer, pioneer of the Harlem Renaissance literary movement, and secured a Guggenheim Fellowship Award to study in Haiti, Jamaica and the Gulf Coast. Ultimately Zora became one of the world’s greatest literary figures.

NAACP winner and New Orleans-actress’ Antoniá Badón, brings Zora to life in this unique one-woman production which transcends time and place with fifteen character portrayals, music and song.

Her exhibit for the Loeb Music Library, In Her Own Hand: Operas Composed by Women 1625–1913, was the first in an American library on this subject. She specializes in 18th-century music, and spent a year in Germany, courtesy of a DAAD Annual Grant, researching the music and life of Maria Antonia, Electress of Saxony.

April always wanted to grow up to be Errol Flynn. No surprise, then, that she now enjoys playing the gallant young men featured in 18th- century Italian opera, characters such as Cherubino, Idamante and Orfeo. Her performance awards include an Urban Artists Initiative/NYC Fellowship and a Queens Council on the Arts Individual Artist Grant. In addition to the article in the Times, articles featuring her have appeared in the New York Daily News, Time Out New York and other publications.

Formed in 1995 at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Quartet came to the fore after participating in The Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshop at Carnegie Hall. In 1997 Stern invited the Avalon String Quartet to perform at The Chamber Music Encounters in Jerusalem and later presented the ensemble's Carnegie Hall debut at Weill Recital Hall.

The quartet captured first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York in1999, and top prize at the ARD Competition in Munich in 2000.

(he) made the hall tremble with thunderous applause.” Violinist Ilmar Gavilon is a native of Cuba, where began his studies at the Havana Conservatory

Shortly after his birth, his parents Louis and Mamie separated leaving Mamie as the sole parent. In 1955, Emmett and his cousin went to visit family in Mississippi. His mother, conscious of the prejudice and racism rampant in Mississippi, instructed Emmett to “mind his manners” around white people. According to some, Emmett whistled at a white woman. Others say he grabbed her hand and asked for a date. Still others claim he said, “Bye, baby” as he left the store. What followed remains as one of the most brutal and senseless accounts of American racial violence in our history. The Lynching of Emmett Till explores the tragic death of this innocent and well-loved young boy and the powerful impact it had upon the emerging American Civil Rights movement.
