Auditions For Dreamgirls

York College Theatre announces auditions for DREAMGIRLS with music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen.

What to Prepare: Please prepare one fast song and one slow song (16 bars each), in the style/genre of Motown, but no songs from the show. The selections should show your vocal and acting skills as well as your ability to move to the music. Please bring your printed sheet music (in the key you plan to sing) and a current performance resume.

Prepared monologues are not necessary, but the audition may require a cold reading. Callbacks take place on Thursday, December 20 from 5-8pm and those who are called back should be prepared to perform a song from DREAMGIRLS.

DREAMGIRLS is a show about a time in American musical history when what is called rhythm and blues blended with other styles of popular music creating a new American sound. Act One is set in the fabulous sixties-a time when we were still screaming at Elvis and listening to the Beatles, but were dancing to the new beat of countless girl and boy groups like The Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Temptations and The Shirelles. Act Two shows the creation and the arrival of disco-though the word is never used in the script. The subject matter of this play deals with a musical contribution to America of such importance that only now-two decades later-are we beginning to understand.

Rehearsals begin in mid January. The show runs May 3rd – May 12th, 2013 in the York College Performing Arts Center, Auditorium.

Mother's love knows no boundaries... After a five-year self-imposed absence, Julio César, a young man with a buried secret, returns home after the death of his father. Over the course of two evenings, mother and son, two estranged generations of Dominicans living in a now gentrified upper west side, attempt to rekindle the love and appreciation for each other and their roots; but Julio César soon realizes he isn’t the only one with a secret. Unexpected revelations threaten to destroy an already thin bond between mother and child.

Many believe the bulk of the Dominican American experience in New York City lies in Washington Heights, but in the unexpected corners of now gentrified upper mid-town are remnants of what once was: Lucecita Ortensia Cruz is one of only a handful of Dominican immigrants that stubbornly remains in this neighborhood.

A sudden death in the family forces her son, Julio César, to return to the City after a five year self-imposed absence. In the course of two nights they attempt to rekindle the love and appreciation for each other and their Dominican roots. But hidden secrets are unexpectedly revealed and threaten to destroy an already thin bond.
