Desire, betrayal, guilt, and revenge- “Macbeth” follows the actions of an ambitious young man, his lust for success, and his ultimate need to understand himself and what it truly is to “be a man.”

With swordfights, witchcraft, suspense, crime, and passion, this production is action-packed— a great introduction to Shakespeare, and appropriate for kids ages 9 and up.

He attended the prestigious Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, studied with Simon Karasick and Dave Schechter at Stony Brook University, and graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in 1978.

Clifton’s career reflects work with a “who’s who” of diverse musical giants including Frank Foster, McCoy Tyner, Clifford Jordan, Stevie Wonder, Dizzy Gillespie, Merv Griffin, The Mighty Sparrow, Lester Bowie, Paul Simon, Muhal Richard Abrams, WyClef Jean, and Dionne Warwick among others. Clifton’s Broadway credits include Dreamgirls and Nine.

Whether performing live or recording in the studio these influences resonate throughout his work.

Shaw provides a wonderful example of how jazz is done right. Critics say he is “the real deal”. The Philadelphia-based and Grammy nominated alto saxophonist delivers a level of maturity and awareness inspired by his long tenure with the Mingus Big Band and most recently, the Roy Haynes Quartet.

]]> No publisher Victor Lopez Current Student Performance Performing Arts Performing and Fine Arts Public 2011-08-22T17:15:00Z Event ZORA Returns To Harlem http://www.york.cuny.edu/events/zora-returns-to-harlem A one woman show about the life and times of Zora Neale Hurston starring NAACP Award Winner Antonia Badón In 1925 Zora Neale Hurston moved to Harlem and became the first black woman to study at Barnard College and attend Columbia University. Zora gained fame as a writer, pioneer of the Harlem Renaissance literary movement, and secured a Guggenheim Fellowship Award to study in Haiti, Jamaica and the Gulf Coast. Ultimately Zora became one of the world’s greatest literary figures.

NAACP winner and New Orleans-actress’ Antoniá Badón, brings Zora to life in this unique one-woman production which transcends time and place with fifteen character portrayals, music and song.

Her exhibit for the Loeb Music Library, In Her Own Hand: Operas Composed by Women 1625–1913, was the first in an American library on this subject. She specializes in 18th-century music, and spent a year in Germany, courtesy of a DAAD Annual Grant, researching the music and life of Maria Antonia, Electress of Saxony.

April always wanted to grow up to be Errol Flynn. No surprise, then, that she now enjoys playing the gallant young men featured in 18th- century Italian opera, characters such as Cherubino, Idamante and Orfeo. Her performance awards include an Urban Artists Initiative/NYC Fellowship and a Queens Council on the Arts Individual Artist Grant. In addition to the article in the Times, articles featuring her have appeared in the New York Daily News, Time Out New York and other publications.

]]> No publisher Victor Lopez Performing Arts Current Student Performance Performing and Fine Arts Public 2011-08-22T16:25:00Z Event Avalon String Quartet http://www.york.cuny.edu/events/avalon-string-quartet Described by the Chicago Tribune as “an ensemble that invites your ears, mind, and spirit into its music”, the Avalon String Quartet has established itself as one of the country's leading Chamber ensembles. Formed in 1995 at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Quartet came to the fore after participating in The Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshop at Carnegie Hall. In 1997 Stern invited the Avalon String Quartet to perform at The Chamber Music Encounters in Jerusalem and later presented the ensemble's Carnegie Hall debut at Weill Recital Hall.

The quartet captured first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York in1999, and top prize at the ARD Competition in Munich in 2000.
