Reading and Learning Strategies for College Students

Once relegated to elementary level grades, the teaching of reading strategies is increasingly being embraced by high school and post-secondary teachers. When students use these strategies, they better understand the vocabulary used in texts, appreciate historical references, and recognize humor, inferences, innuendo, allusions, and sarcasm.
This workshop will explore the ways faculty can help students across the educational continuum apply various reading strategies, including pre-reading, word walls, mapping, main-idea, and questioning strategies. As librarians, Professors Miller and Urban have helped hundreds of students interact with printed and electronic materials and can discuss specific learning strategies with York College's students in mind.
