I study the colonial period from a gender perspective. I focus on how women claimed their right to read, write, and teach in a time in which these activities were exclusive to men. I also explore the role of women in the construction of the Hispanic American identity. In the area of Bilingual Education I study the various theories on bilingualism and biculturalism from socio political and philosophical perspectives. I focus on the different approaches and methodologies on teaching children and adolescents living in urban bilingual contexts paying special attention to developmental and maintenance programs that promote bilingualism and biculturalism.
