What is Construction Management
Construction managers supervise the planning and building of homes, schools, public buildings and infrastructure such as roads and bridges. Employees of construction, architecture or utilities firms who wish to put their skills to use in a management capacity may wish to consider earning certificates in construction management, as well as professional certification.
Certificate in Construction Management
A construction management certificate is intended for professionals such as electricians, carpenters, architects or civil engineering technicians who want to advance to management positions or prepare for a degrees in construction management. Coursework teaches students to oversee every phase of a construction project, from project cost analysis and materials selection to quality control and site management.
Our Program
- A certificate of completion will be issued upon successful completion of the 154 hours of instruction.
- Individuals who receive the Advanced Construction Management Certificate may request consideration for college credit toward a degree at York College.
- To be eligible for this program, you must have a High School Diploma, GED, or Foreign equivalent.
Course Description
Advanced Construction Management - Part I
This course will focus on four areas of construction management
- Fundamentals of Estimating
- Introduction to Construction Management
- Sustainable Building (LEED - GA)
- Building Information Modeling (BIM)
- Fundamentals of Construction Scheduling
Participants will learn the managerial aspects of constracting and the relationship between individual firms and the entire construction industry. Students will develop construction management skills for daily exchanges with staff, peers and business associates. In the Sustainable Building portion of the course instructors will familiarize students with sustainability, USGBC LEED ratings, green design, construction resources, and green materials utilized on construction projects. This portion provides participants with the path they need to pursue their LEED Associate Accreditation.
Participants will be introduced to Building Information Modeling (BIM), electronic 3-dimensional "smart" models that graphically represent the physical & functional aspects of a building's system. It is dramatically reshaping the way project teams work together to increase productivity and improve outcomes. This class will show contractors how this transformative technology is molding the future of the industry. You will get a complete overview of the capabilities of BMI and it is implemented on individual projects. The Fundamentals of Construction Scheduling will discuss the relationship between sequential activities. This session teaches you the fundamental dependencies focusing on the basic theory of "Finish to Start". It will equip you with the tools needed to monitor progress and efficiently manage work within the agreed timeline. Building portion of the course instructors will familiarized students with sustainability, USGBC LEED ratings, green design, construction resources, and green materials utilized on construction projects. Advanced Construction Management - Part II
The second part of the Advanced Certificate in Construction Management will focus on:
- Fundamentals of Estimating
- Project Management
- Marketing for Success in the Building Trades
- Mastering the Numbers: Finance for Growth
- Bankable Business Plans
- 10-Hour OSHA & Construction Safety
- Field Management & Site Tour
Fundamentals of Estimating is designed to develop basic principles of estimating for the entire construction process. It will include Turner's unique approach to estimating detailing preconstruction, budget preparation, and foundations of major Structural Architectural & MEPs Systems (HVAC, Fire protection, Plumbing, and electrical Work and broad numbers). The project Management portion of this course will teach you how to responsibly manage the operation of a project by focusing on schedule & budget. You will acquire key insight to jthe coordination efforts between Trades, Safety Staff, Designers, Owner, Architect and Governmental Organizations.
Marketing for Success, Mastering the Numbers, and Bankable Business Plans cover the bottom-line topics every business needs to be successful. You will cover concepts such as market definition, market segmentation, and promotional strategies. Finance experts will describe the basic financial statements and the informtion that goes into them. Elements of both Financial and Managerial accounting will be vovered as will the ratios that bankers rely upon. And we will discuss how to take the plan that is in your head and put it on paper so jthat "you can take that to the bank."
The program will culminate with OSHA 10 Hour Safety Certification and Field Management & Site Tour which will focus on real developments on a construction project. There will be a site walk through where you will learn to recognize the complexities of a site such as the coordination of participants and their schedules:
Salary Info and Employment Outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in May of 2008 construction managers earned a median annual wage of $79,860. In the period from 2008-2018, job opportunities are expected to rise by 17% due to a growing population and an increasing need for managers to oversee the construction of homes, schools and retail outlets (www.bls.gov).
