<p>I was born the oldest of four daughters in Brooklyn, NY. However, I am particularly proud of my heritage, which has roots in the Caribbean islands of St. Croix, Barbados and Montserrat. I spent my childhood growing up in the Bedford Styvesant neighborhood; specifically, the Roosevelt projects on Dekalb Avenue. I was bussed to the elementary school, P.S. 199 in Brooklyn. I first realized I had an aptitude for Mathematics and Science during my attendance of Marine Park JHS; there I was the only black student enrolled in the Special Progress program. In my senior year of JHS, I won 2nd place in the Science Fair and scored in the 90s on all my regent and citywide exams. I graduated with high honors and was a member of: the school band, the girls’ basketball team, the science club and the honors club. I passed the exams for all of New York's Technical High Schools: the Bronx School of Science, Styvesant and Brooklyn Technical. Instead of attending those schools, I moved to Cambridge, MA to live with my grandparents and attended high school at the Cambridge School of Weston. I played basketball and softball in high school and in the Cambridge Recreation Leagues.<br /><br /> The summer following my junior year of HS, I participated in the UNITE (now called MITE) Program. During one of the field trips that summer, I visited an Air Force Base in NH. There, I was able to sit in the control tower and fly in a flight simulator (I received a pilots score). UNITE was extremely instrumental in my consideration of career choices. It led me to the decision of entering the Aerospace field. During my last year of HS, I volunteered as a Physical Education Teacher for several of the Cambridge elementary schools. Occasionally, I enjoy participating in basketball, skiing, cycling and tennis. Also, I have taken a scuba diving class. Currently, I still love playing team softball, and Co-ed Flag football.<br /><br /> After graduating from high school with honors, I entered college at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where I received my Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering. During my undergraduate years at MIT, I was involved with several projects that were geared toward manned space flight. These projects involved working with: a) the Applied Physics Laboratory - developed a fiber optic laser gyroscope, b) the Space Systems Laboratory - created a database for EVA neutral buoyancy activities performed at NASA Johnson Space Center, and c) Senior Project - Manned Mars Mission crew systems specialist for interplanetary vehicle. These projects generated a strong desire to participate in manned space missions. With this in mind, I have applied for NASA's astronaut program. Initially, I had been placed on a medical review for asthma. Since then, I received a prescreening medical application and several of my references were contacted. After the last shuttle disaster, candidate selection was placed on hold until this year. Due to the new addition to my family, my daughter Arielle, I have now placed my aspirations to be an astronaut on the back burner.<br /><br /> When I graduated from MIT (the year of the Shuttle disaster), all the jobs offered in Aerospace Engineering were for strategic defense. Ronald Reagan had this big scheme that missiles would protect the U.S. this would mean my future job could require me to develop missiles. It is extremely important to me that the projects I work on are not strategic defense-related. As a result upon completion of my education at MIT, I was encouraged by my best friend, Melva Bradford Warner to return to school. I choose to attend her alma mater, Howard University (HU) in Washington, DC, as a graduate student in the Large Space Structures Institute. I obtained a Masters of Engineering and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace option. My Ph.D. research objective at HU was to develop practical design procedures that could be used in conjunction with optimal digital controllers for future orbiting large space structure systems like the Space Station. As a student at HU, I was extremely fortunate. My education was funded by many fellowship and grants: NASA GSFC COOP, HU Terminal Dissertation Year, NASA Center -of Excellence- for Studies of Terrestrial &amp; Extra Terrestrial Atmospheres, Wright Patterson Air Force Laboratories and Dorothy Danford Compton Dissertation, NASA DC Space Grant Consortium, Patricia Roberts Harris, and Pacific Telesis Foundation. During graduate school, I participated in some really cool summer programs: SIECA and NASA Space Academy. My research at HU allowed me to travel to Germany, Canada, England, and throughout the US to present technical papers. During my travels, I won several student paper competitions; the last one, the most prestigious, was the “6th International Space Conference for Pacific-Basin Societies” were I won 1st place for the Ph.D. student competition.<br /><br /> The majority of my engineering career has been spent working at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC); where NASA plays a vital role in global understanding of the Sun-Earth connection, Earth, and Space science. My NASA career started as an aerospace engineer in the Robotics group, but soon after, I transferred into the Guidance Navigation &amp; Control discipline. Initially, I worked on three different satellite projects: XTE-X-Ray Timing Explorer, TRMM-Tropical Rain Forest Measurement Mission and TRACE-Transition Region &amp; Coronal Explorer. For these missions, I have either developed or utilized dynamic modeling simulation programs. These programs are invaluable in predetermining the dynamics and structural reactions of the spacecraft. I have also utilized the simulation software to design a combining filter (low &amp; high pass filter) to control the Pitch axis better than the project TRACE’s implemented Kalman filter. I spent 3 years working on a MIDEX project called MAP-Microwave Anisotropy Probe, which was successfully launched on June 30, 2001. My engineering responsibilities as an attitude control systems analyst included (but were not limited to) stability analysis and dynamic-structural simulation, development, simulation, analysis and software testing of the attitude determination and Kalman Filter routines and requirements, Thruster and Inertial operation modes, analysis of the environmental disturbances, and actuator sizing. Prior to MAP, I performed the initial analysis for actuator sizing and a feasibility study for a New Millennium microsat project, Colibri. I found this mission extremely exciting because it will implement new technologies as well as innovative guidance, navigation and control techniques, (e.g., Global Positioning System (GPS)) for a miniature system.<br /><br /> After MAP, I spent a year working in the Integrated Mission Design Center (IMDC). The IMDC is a quick paced design environment. In one week, a team of engineers from various disciplines, work together to either design or enhance a spacecraft mission. The disciplines include: Structural &amp; Mechanical; Instrument Interface; Power &amp; Electrical; Flight Dynamics; Guidance, Navigation &amp; Control; Thermal; Propulsion; Communications; Mission Assurance &amp; Reliability; Command &amp; Data, Handling; Ground Systems &amp; Operations; Launch Vehicle Systems; and, Resources &amp; Cost Estimating. My work as lead engineer for the Attitude Control Systems group required: determining the spacecraft operation modes; calculating of the environmental disturbances; actuator and sensor sizing; stability and dynamic-structural analysis; power, mass and cost budgets; simulation and feasibility studies; and, development of control algorithms. The IMDC team presents to the science team the various design aspects and tradeoffs of the mission.<br /><br /> In September of 2001, I was detailed for 11 months at NASA Headquarters under Mary Cleave, previous Deputy Administrator for the Earth Science Enterprise (ESE). She is a former astronaut/scientist who managed the SeaWifs project at GSFC. I was matrixed to work jointly with the ESE Science and Program Planning &amp; Development Division. I worked on a couple of projects and spacecraft missions. For example, I was to help redesign our science data products distribution -EOSDIS to SEEDS- which will be implemented for the Next Phase POESS (NPP) project. (EOSDIS is the current data network that has been set up to distribute data to the various science communities, agencies and international partners.)  In addition, I was the Program Executive (PE) for the Ice, Cloud, &amp; Elevation Satellite (ICESat) and Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) missions. As PE, I offered solutions to problems that might arise as the project worked towards launch and acted as liaison between NASA Headquarters management and NASA Center spacecraft/instrument group. Also, I was a member of the ESE: Outreach Policy group, Safety team and Visions Strategy Team.<br /><br /> Upon my return to GSFC, I was detailed to the Instrument Systems Branch as the Proposal and Instrument Manager for the Advanced X-Ray Polarimeter (AXP) mission 2003 proposal. During that assignment, I led a team of scientist and engineers in writing a proposal for a small -Space Science- explorer (SMEX) that would cost little more than $120M. From that proposal effort, the AXP team was unexpectedly awarded technology development funds of $500K+.  After completing the AXP proposal, I began working as an Instrument Manager (IM) for the NIRSpec Detector System on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This telescope will improve upon the current capabilities of Hubble Space Telescope. This instrument subsystem had a budget of ~$60M of a $+2B budget for JWST. Following my participation that effort, I was the telescope manager on another SMEX proposal effort, Jupiter Magnetospheric Explorer (JMEX). For the JMEX effort we received $450K for trade studies, but we were not selected to continue into the build phase. The following year, I did a 4-month detail at NASA HQs in the Science Directorate as a Program Analyst; during that assignment, I worked on the 2006 Science budget reporting project. When I returned to GSFC, I was the instrument/proposal manager for a new “Living with a Star” (LWS) instrument development called Vector ElectroDynamics Investigation (VEDI) and the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) Coronagraph Instrument Concept Study called CorSpec. The team won $250K for a Concept Study Report for CorSpec. During 2006 and 2007, I participated as was the IM for a “Living with a Star” mission, MMS SMART Fast Plasma Instrument (FPI), which would involve 4 spacecraft flying in a configuration at various altitudes in the tail of the solar magnetosphere that interacts with the Earth’s environment. I helped managd the components being built at GSFC, was the management liaison for similar components being built by our Japanese partners and managed several extensive budget activities for FPI. In 2006, I collaborated as the IM for a “Mars Scout” proposal called “SCIM”, a proposed sample and return mission to Mars. Specifically, I was the manager for the Dust collector Experiment (DuCE) which proposed sterilization and stowage of trapped dust particles from the Martian lower atmosphere into the aerogel trays that were positioned in the sides of sample return capsule for delivery to Earth. During 2006-2007, I also served as a Loaned Executive to the Combine Federal Campaign for the National Capital Area. In this capacity I facilitated, monitored, trained, delegated and inspired Federal Agencies and their employees to give to non-profit charities and agencies. I was responsible for ~$2M in donations. During 2007 and 2008, as Instrument Engineer, I supported the development of two flight instruments (ST8 Miniature Thermal Loop Heat Pipe, a technology development and, Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA), an instrument on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter) during their integration and testing periods. The LOLA instrument was successfully integrated to the LRO spacecraft April 2008, which was launched on June 18, 2009. Recently, I participate as the Instrument Manager on the Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small Explorer (GEMS formerly AXP) team in the recently selected Small Explorer mission. I was responsible for a $+30M budget that would deliver a three- telescope instrument comprised of incidence foil mirrors, a coilable boom, a student experiment and three polarimeters (detectors that measure the polarization of X-ray beams) with fairly standard support electronic boxes and thermal control system. Currently, I am the Acting IM for the ICESat-2/ATLAS (Ice, Cloud, &amp; Land Elevation Satellite), a $240M lidar laser altimeter instrument that will provide measurements over the Greenland and Antarctica ice sheets to quantify changes in ice-sheet mass and its drivers, and the impact of these changes on future global sea level; monitor changes in sea-ice thickness to examine ice-ocean-atmosphere exchanges of energy, mass, and moisture; and measure vegetation canopy height as a basis for estimating large-scale biomass and biomass change. ICESat-2 is expected to launch in 2016.<br /><br /> For many years, I have been an Adjunct Professor at local universities in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Most recently, I taught “System Dynamics and Control Theory” at HU in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. I have also taught “Automatic Controls” and “Vibrations Analysis” at HU. In the past, I have taught various mathematics classes at Bowie State University (BSU). During my tenure at BSU, I was contracted to help improve their engineering curriculum. I designed two new courses for the freshmen and sophomore students, to help students’ transition into their new engineering curriculum. They were: a professional engineering overview seminar and an engineering design course. The exposure to professionals in a seminar environment would allow them to view the various engineering disciplines of the prior to attending a secondary college to complete their engineering degrees. Currently, I serve as liaison between HU and NASA GSFC for recruitment and research partnerships. In a similar capacity I am the NASA GSFC representative on MIT’s Industry Advisory Council for Minority Education.<br /><br /> I feel obligated to help spur the interest of minorities and females in the math, science and engineering disciplines; without diversity in all fields the United States will not remain technically competitive.  Therefore, I am a member of the NASA GSFC Speakers Bureau and the Women of NASA Group and I have been Aerospace-Rocketry-Mechanical-Engineering-Professor-Computer Instructor-Career Advisor-Mentor and Friend for many students. I teach Aerospace theory to students at HU Public Charter Middle School of Math &amp; Science (MS)2 . My most notable speaking engagements as a member of the GSFC Speakers Bureau and the Women of NASA Group; include Women in Engineering -South Africa- Conference, Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy for Girls and a Nifty Fifty speaker for the USA Science &amp; Engineering festival.  I work with students of all age groups; I feel it is important to create an early mathematical and/or scientific interest in young people and maintain it throughout their later years. In addition, I have also created an email pipeline for under-represented groups in the technology fields to distribute the announcements for federal grants, internships and employment. As a proposal and application reviewer for NSF, NASA GSFC and Headquarters programs, I try to ensure that there is a fair review of all applicants regardless of race or gender.<br /><br /> For my future, I have several career paths in mind, they are: a mission specialist for the astronaut program; an academian at a university; and an advisor or liaison to the White House for Science, Technology and Education Policies. My experiences have allowed me continue to grow and expand my expertise. My HU experience expanded my ability to carry out full-fledged engineering research projects and provided me with leadership opportunities in university politics. My NASA GSFC experience extended my knowledge of current engineering control techniques, implementation of innovative ideas, as well as, gained “hands on” training experience in spacecraft and instrument design, management, and implementation. My NASA HQs experience afforded me the ability to manage and to understand policy associated with aerospace programs. Utilizing my training, I want to develop a satellite research center(s) at Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCU); students could build and design either CubeSats or microsats for piggyback payload or formation flying type space missions. Once I have become an established academian, I plan to help create an Aerospace Research Center at an HBCU. I will offer administrative, teaching, education and technology policy experience to any of these career choices by utilizing my past exposure as the Graduate Student Council President, HU Presidential appointed committees, NASA GSFC committees, NTA committees, review boards, University professor, Harvard/Radcliffe researcher, and White House technical forums attendee. My most recent duties include member of: HU Board of Trustees, HU MS² Board of Directors and HU Environmental Sustainability Council, International Black Aerospace Council, Forestville Military Academy, and SECME. I also serve as the Space Science Chair for the NSBE Aerospace Systems Conference.<br /><br /> Over the years, I have received numerous awards, which I’m highlighting a few of them. In 1996 and 1997, I was acknowledged by the National Technical Association, for being amongst the Top 50 minority women in Science and Engineering. In 1997, I received The “Women in Science and Engineering” award for being the best female engineer in the Federal Government that year. In 1998, I received a Special Recognition Award at the Black Engineers Award Conference.  I have received four NASA awards, they are: 1998-NASA Goddard Honor Award for Excellence in Outreach, 1998- Center of Excellence Award for the TRMM Project, 1999-Customer Service Excellence Award for MAP Flight Software, and 2002- NASA Exceptional Achievement Award for Her Outreach efforts. I also received a “1999 Federal Career Award” from The Federal Executive Board of Excellence of Maryland, a “Topp’s Africa-Centered Award” from Bowie State University, and a “Centurion of Technology Award” at the Women’s of Color Technology Awards Conference. In February of 2000, I received a “Giant in Science Award” from The Quality Education for Minorities Network: Mathematics, Science and Engineering and a NASA Customer Service Excellence Award for MAP Flight Software. In 2001, I received an award from the Marketing, Opportunities in Business &amp; Entertainment Conference for being and Innovator in Internet Technology, and I received an honorary Doctor of Science from Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, NY. In 2002, I received a HU College of Engineering, Architecture, &amp; Computer Science Alumni Excellence Award and several NASA Awards; one was for Exceptional Achievement in Outreach. In 2006, I was honored by NASA GSFC with an Excellence Award in Outreach, by the Bessie Coleman Foundation for my achievements and inspiration to youth to follow Aerospace related careers and Women of Color Technology Professional Achievement Award. In 2007,the National Executive Board of the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees awarded me the Ron E. McNair Award; this award was established to honor pioneers and scholars in aeronautics, who have significantly contributed through recruitment, education, and training in the field of aeronautics (and other technical fields). In addition, during the 2008 Congressional Black Caucus activities, the Black Women’s Agenda, Inc. conference, I was given an award for my career accomplishments in my field and the guidance, mentoring, and training of young women in the science and engineering fields. In February of 2010, I received a Science Trailblazers award from the Black Engineers of the Year Award Conference.</p>

I am also profiled in two history books, “Black Stars: African American Women Scientists and Inventors” and “Distinguished African Americans in Aviation and Space Science”; additionally, I am quoted in a new Technical writing textbook, “Technical Communication in the Twenty First Century”, an article published in a George Lucas Foundation publication, “Edutopia: Success Stories for Learning in the Digital Age”, featured in a H.S. Physics book, in a Children’s Science book, “The Sun (Watts Library: SPACE)” and in the Sally Ride’s Science Engineering book series.<br /><br /> I am proud to be the first (African American) female to receive a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from HU; the first American to receive a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, the Aerospace option from HU; and the first African American female to receive a Ph.D. in Engineering at NASA GSFC.</p>

<p>Named one of the “Power 100” by Ebony Magazine in its 2011 list of the 100 most influential African Americans, Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. is the President &amp; CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the only national organization representing nearly 300,000 students attending this country’s 47 public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). With approximately 80% of all HBCU students attending TMCF member-schools, Mr. Taylor leads an organization responsible for providing this country a robust and diverse pipeline of talented workers and future leaders.</p>
<p>Immediately prior to assuming the presidency of TMCF, Mr. Taylor worked as a senior executive for IAC/InterActiveCorp – first as its Senior Vice President of Human Resources and then as the President &amp; CEO of one of IAC’s operating subsidiaries, RushmoreDrive.com. Before joining IAC, Mr. Taylor’s career spanned nearly 15 years as Litigation Partner and President of the human resources consulting business for the McGuireWoods law firm; Executive Vice President, General Counsel &amp; Corporate Secretary for Compass Group USA; General Counsel &amp; Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Viacom subsidiary, Paramount Pictures Live Entertainment Group; and Associate General Counsel &amp; Vice President of Human Resources for Viacom subsidiary, Blockbuster Entertainment Group.</p>
<p>Mr. Taylor, an Isaac Bashevis Singer Scholar and honors graduate of the University of Miami, went on to earn a Master of Arts With Honors from Drake University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence With Honors from the Drake Law School, where he served as Research Editor of the Drake Law Review and argued on the National Moot Court Team. He is licensed to practice law in Florida, Illinois, and Washington, D.C. and holds a Senior Professional in Human Resources certification. Mr. Taylor, who currently serves on the corporate board of Gallup, a leader in organizational consulting and public opinion research, also volunteers his time to several not-forprofit boards, including serving as: Former Chairman of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), one of the world’s largest professional associations with 250,000 members in over 100 countries; and Member of the Board of Directors of the YMCA of the USA, the country’s largest social service agency. <p class="western">Dr. Moreno Vega has conducted extensive research in Yoruba Belief systems in the African Diaspora and has organized three international conferences uniting scholars and traditional leaders who are experts on these religions.</p>
<p class="western">Dr. Vega was awarded a grant from the Ford Foundation, which partially supported the filming of the documentary “When the Spirits Dance Mambo” which was featured at the Brower Student Center and originally premiered at the Havana International Latino Film Festival in Cuba December 2002. The documentary, shot in Cuba, focuses on the impact of Santeria on the Civil Society of the island. She has received research fellowships from El Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños at Hunter College for developing a documentary on African based Spiritual Practices in Puerto Rico.</p>
<p class="western">Dr. Vega was acting director of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program at Hunter College for the semester of Fall 2002 during a leave by the director. She is presently teaching Afro-Caribbean Religions and Afro Latinos in New York City at Hunter College/CUNY.</p>
<p class="western">She is co-editor of “Voices from the Battlefront: Achieving Cultural Equity” and author of “The Altar of My Soul: The Living Traditions of Santeria” as well as the book “When the Spirits Dance Mambo.” The New York Women’s Agenda has selected When the Spirits Dance Mambo as the book of the year 2007 for distribution to New York City Public Schools as part of their New York Reads Initiative funded by Roz Abramson.</p>
<p class="western">Dr. Vega received her Doctorate in Yoruba Philosophy in the Diaspora from Temple University in May 1995. She is the founder of the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute and former director of El Museo del Barrio and the Association of Hispanic Arts. She is one of the founders of the Association of Hispanic Arts and the Network of Organization of Color. Dr. Vega is presently president of the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) founded in 1976. CCCADI is an international not for profit organization dedicated to researching, documentation and promulgating the reach history and traditions of African descendants in the Americas. CCCADI has organized international conferences in Nigeria Africa, Bahia Brazil, Puerto Rico and New York.</p>
<p class="western">Dr. Vega is co-founder of the Global Afro Latino and Caribbean Initiative (GALCI) that has established a alliance of non-governmental not for profit organizations that are grounded in African descendant communities. GALCI has organized international conferences, youth international exchange programs, actively developed exchanges to connect and develop working projects with African descendant communities in the Americas. With the assistance of Hunter College CUNY, Caribbean Cultural Center, Ford - Foundation among other resources GALCI has participated in international conferences and planning meetings to assure that they issues of African descendants are equitably included in policymaking forums. Dr. Vega recently organized two international conferences for GALCI – Redefining African American and Women of Power with the sponsorship of the IAF, Essence Magazine, among other funders.</p>
<p class="western">Dr. Marta Moreno-Vega was featured in Essence magazine as one of Essence’s 25 Most Beautiful People. This issue focused on women who make positive transforming contributions to the civil society of their communities. Dr. Vega’s book, <i>When the Spirits Dance Mambo</i> was selected by the New York Women’s Agenda as their book for 2006/2007.</p>
<p class="western">She is a member of the UNESCO United States Advisory Commission on the Slave Route Project.</p>
