Taxpayer's most common questions answered. (the VITA Program)

FAQ overview

Is this service really free? Should I give something to my preparer?

The VITA program prohibits gifts of any kind to our interns.  This service is absolutely free; the program is intended to help individuals prepare their taxes who cannot afford to pay for a professional tax preparer.

It’s free, should I expect a long wait and unprofessionalism?

The VITA program at York College is unique in that we staff interns and not volunteers.  We run a professional program which is intended to provide excellent service to clients and provide job experience for our excellent interns.  We cannot control the flow of our cliental on a daily basis, however we are fully staffed everyday and we do not expect a long wait.

How do I know my return will be prepared correctly?

As explained in the question above, we are a professional VITA site and one of a kind.  The IRS only states that we must have at least two reviews on a completed return.  We hold a total of 5 reviews which includes a client review to ensure personal information is correct.  Each level of review goes through a more experienced tax professional.  We however do not expect there to be any errors after the first review.  We just want to ensure complete accuracy the first time around.

I don’t know anything about taxes how can I trust you?

Not only is our site professional but the main objective of the VITA program is to help prepare an individual’s taxes as well as educate the client on their taxes.  We understand it is difficult to understand, we study long hours to understand tax law and we will explain everything you need and want to know to our best abilities.

What happens if I forget an important document?

During our interview process we will go over everything you should have in order for us to prepare your taxes correctly. Unfortunately, if you are missing an important document you will have to return to our site with all necessary documents. We are not allowed to hold incomplete returns.  All incomplete returns will be deleted at the end of each night.

I’m filing jointly does my spouse really have to be there?

Yes, there is no exception.  We need both parties to be present to complete the return, because both parties will need to sign a form which indicates we are allowed to send the return, the IRS will double check that we have all necessary signed forms.  Also please note to the question above that we cannot hold incomplete returns, even if it is missing a signature.

I am an independent contractor or a person who only deals with cash transactions, why do I need a special appointment?

Independent contractors or clients who only deal with cash transactions are complicated cases.  We want to ensure that you are receiving every benefit possible, such as necessary expenses that need to be deducted.

I go to school at York College and I am a foreign student why do I need to make an appointment?

Under the VITA program only specialized individuals can prepare your taxes.  This ensures we follow the necessary rules such as ensuring we are filing a non-resident form instead of a resident form.

There is a mistake on my return, what should I do?

If for whatever reason you feel that your return contains a mistake then please explain the situation to one of our managers on staff and they will be able to help you.

I am only available Monday or Wednesday what should I do?

We understand that clients have busy schedules, if for whatever reason you cannot come in on any of our days that we are open please contact us and we will see if we can be able to help you.
