Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Inc.

Thurgood Marshall College Fund scholarships are not awarded directly to students. Scholarships are awarded to the student via the member college or university to which the student has been accepted. Scholarships will only be awarded per semester based on available funding.

Students interested in applying for a TMCF Scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • A citizen of the United States of America
  • Full-time student pursuing a degree in any discipline at one of the 47 TMCF "member schools" York College is one of them.
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence and community service with a GPA of not less than 3.0; High School students a combined verbal/math score of 1650 or more on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or a score of 25 or higher on the American College Testing (ACT) examination
  • Recommended by their high school or college as academically exceptional or outstanding in the creative and performing arts
  • Demonstrated financial need and maintain not less than 3.0 GPA each year for the duration of the scholarship

Potential applicants should note that TMCF scholarships:

  • Are merit-based
  • Are awarded to students with a demonstrated financial need
  • May be awarded to any class student, not just incoming freshmen
  • May be renewable but renewal is not guaranteed
  • Are restricted to payment of tuition, room and board, books and fees
  • Average approximately $2200 per student per semester
  • Are awarded through the member schools, not directly to students from TMCF - Students interested in a TMCF scholarship should contact a scholarship coordinator (Brunilda Almodovar, Scholarship Center, 4DA1) at any member college or university and apply through the school - Member schools select candidates and contact TMCF to administer the funding

TO APPLY FOR A 2009-10 TMCF SCHOLARSHIP PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR APPLICATION. Please note: ONCE YOU BEGIN THIS APPLICATION PROCESS YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO RETURN TO THE SAME APPLICATION.

DEADLINE: AUGUST 15, 2009

1. Please select one of the following topics to write an essay of 500-1000 words. (This is a required document. If you submit your application without a copy of your essay, your application will not be considered for award.)

· What made you choose to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU)?

· How have you made a difference on your college campus and what legacy will you leave behind once you have graduated?

· If you are a first generation college student, what does it mean to be the first in your family to attain a college degree?

2. Please attach an updated resume with your online scholarship application. Include any information on honor/awards you have received and school or volunteer activities. (This is a required document. If you submit your application without a copy of your resume, your application will not be considered for award.)

3. Please attach at least one letter of recommendation from, but not limited to, former teachers, college administrators, community leaders or other similar persons concerning the academic ability, character, reputation or professional aptitude of the applicant. (This is a required document. If you submit your application without a recommendation your application will not be considered for award.)
